Been a user for 1 week only. Can you help with settings to use Mail for Hotmail. Is it possible. I am hotmail.com I can get Homtail via Google etc but would like to use the Mail facility on dashboard. Thanks.
you need to have a hotmail plus account to be able to use hotmail in an email client such as Mail. if you just have regular hotmail you can only access it via webmail using a web browser.

I'm not sure if you can access Mail through Dashboard. Once you have set up Hotmail in your Mac Mail application all you have to do is click the Mail icon in your Dock.
Hi Bill, I don't think this is true. Certainly Hotmail will not accept MobileMe trying to receive messages from it. You simply get the message "The mail server for your external POP account cannot be reached. Make sure the incoming mail server is correct in the Other tab of Mail Preferences". Did you ever try this? It doesn't seem to be able to connect to pop3.live.com. I guess Hotmail is blocking it.
Hi Ernie, what mail server did you use? pop3.live.com? It doesn't work - at least not for me. I've just been through it with an online Apple support guy and he couldn't make it work either. Do you have an Hotmail Plus account? thanks.
Furthermore http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2137 says "Note: POP does not support SSL connections, and uses port 110 only (not SPOP and port 995). Some POP services only work with secure POP and therefore cannot be used with MobileMe Mail." so I cannot understand how you got Hotmail working (as it requires SSL and different port numbers). Was this recently? Thanks.
Using pop3.live.com, on Port 995 with SSL! Also using smtp on Port 587, with SSL. Not a Plus account, and this was the default configuration that Mail accomplished as soon as the Create button was clicked.
There can be periods of getting password prompts if left to auto check for new messages. I also set this up in Mail 2.1.4 in 10.4.11, with those same port settings. Working as I post, but I keep it set to only get new mail manually, but it can work on auto for long periods of time. The servers may be a little weird with Mail?
