iPod Shuffle Moisture problem / Sweat Malfunction / Headphones do not work

Is there any solution to this? I'm on my THIRD replacement set of my 4gb shuffle. If I use it to go running, the headphones are toast...the volume controls goes first, and if I keep using it, so will the song advance button. I hear there are other headphones out there with tapstick controls. Anyone out there had any luck with them?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.2), have numerous iPods/iPhones

I am on my second set of in-ear head phones for the 4G and have just had them fail on me. I have gone back to using the Belkin head phone adapter for the shuffle, with my over the ear phones that I previously used with my Mini Disc player. The Belkin cost under $20 in Australia and quite frankly I can't be bothered with all the hassle of the Apple product. My workouts are too important to me to be bothered with the chance that this problem will reoccur.By the way I train indoors and don't sweat more than you would expect. I use the AC and a fan when it is hot.
I love the shuffle, but not the fall out the ear phones, or the in-ear ones.

Just to add to the choir, I have had the same problem: controls unresponsive while at the gym.
My point is, isn't this a lightweight ipod ideal for sports, so, isn't sweating pretty unavoidable when it comes to this kind of activities?
I am having my 3rd gen shuffle replaced a second time and this is most annoying. The genius kind of hinted that "this can't be done indefinitely". That's my expectation as well. I hate to have to waste the time and rush to the Apple Store every time my shuffle doesn't work under totally normal usage conditions. I hope Apple will step up and do the right thing.

Hi

i have the same problem, i am already in my third set of earphones (i am a marathon runner). i wanted to know if somebody has tried the Scoche earphones to see if they are resistant to work-outs.

the temporary solution i have been using so far is to wrap the remote control of the earphones with contact paper... so far it has worked with this third set of earphones. it may not be very helpful but at least it works (so far)...

I agree with all of you! As soon as I'm about 15-20 minutes into a workout or run, the voice over comes on and starts repeating the song list, I am unable to advance the songs, the volume, etc.

I am so bummed, because this product was especially exciting for me as I took up running. The thing broke down on me during all of my 10K races leading up to a half marathon last fall. Thinking it was broken, I went to the Apple store not once, but twice. The first time the salesgirl gave me a free seat of headphones. Problem kept happening. When I went back, the guy acted like I had done something to break it, said I'd need an appointment if I wanted a replacement. They were booked the whole day. So..... against my better judgment I just went and just bought another one. I absolutely must have music while I'm running, and knew I wouldn't make it through the half marathon without it.

Miraculously it worked for the half, but coincidentally it was about 35 degrees in Detroit that day so it wasn't exactly sweating weather. In fact, if I'm running outside and it's cold the thing works, if I'm running inside on the treadmill and sweating, it breaks down.

I really wish Apple would do the right thing and just recall the product. I am not one to normally participate in chat rooms, but as a marketing professional I understand their importance. I sincerely hope someone from Apple's customer service team is reading this and pushes it up the flagpole there at their corporate offices. In my opinion, when you take someone's money you're offering them a promise. When that promise is unable to be fulfilled, you fix it. End of story. Even if you're already a powerful brand with tons of demand for your products/services, you just don't forget where you came from and the people who got you where you are.... the customers writing these reviews are the ones who fund your paycheck and it must be remembered.

Apple, I hope you're listening.

Same here, after about 20 mins. the thing starts malfunctioning, with the voice-over coming on to inform me of the playlists and/or song name. This is very annoying because, like so many others, I got this for running and general working out which, as far as I know, might involve sweating. Did Apple not test this or get any feedback when product testing? Any news on an answer from them?

I bought a shuffle in Jan 2010 and had to take it back yesterday as it failed to work properly after going to the gym 6 times. I spoke to technical and they asked me to speak to an apple retail shop - apple retail put me back to apple technical and then customer relations. you have to remember in all of this all i want is an mp3 player which works when i go to the gym. I asked the apple retail shop if they could discount some in ear head phones as they were designed more for the purpose i required ie running. They put me forward to CR and they offered me a voucher so if i spent £70 they would knock off 20%+/-, the new headphones were £61. Stalemate.
This made the situation very uncomfortable and didn't resolve my problem as i didn't need anything else than a set of headphones that work at £61.
The shuffle cost £50. The CR were very uncompromising even thought they would be happy to send out new headphones as and when i need them.
I am at the point where apple haven't sold me the dream - the CR were very unhelpful to the point were i am thinking of taking the ipod back to the shop and getting another manufacturers - pity as i was looking at getting new apple laptops and media stuff.

HI HenryFSU, just wondering if your Scosche headphones worked for your shuffle? I need to get a replacement for this flawed designed headphones as Apple won't do any better. Had I known I would not have bought my very first shuffle. It is slick in design but that's all about it. I join in with the rest experiencing the same issues and I am astonished to read users experiencing this since 2009 and it's a year later with the same issues! Apple! get on with it or give us back our money and admit this is your flawed design, or just redesign it and have our shuffles replaced. Display some integrity will you.

I have the same problem with my headphones, I just can listen to music but I can't change or know the song's name. I am from Chile, and my girlfriend give it to me as a gift of my graduation in college. In the end, it worked for a little time (around 1 hour) and then it did not work anymore. I am very frustrated about this situation, because here in Chile I don't know where to turn for help or a change in my Ipod Shuffle(or just my heardphones), because I don't want to buy other one. When I was in the States I had my very old Ipod and I didn't have any problem with go to the apple store and ask for help.
I hope you guys from Apple could help me and let me know what can I do.
I will waiting for your answers by email or in this post.

Sincerely
Sergio
