Desktop computer crashes after sleep mode since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since I upgraded my power Mac to Snow Leopard in December, I've had nothing but problems, all of which appear to stem from when it comes out of sleep mode. This computer and all applications were rock solid in Leopard! I also have a mac book running identical programs and that IS rock solid on Snow Leopard. I have a 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processor with 10 GB ram.
I did a complete re-install of SL and all programs as per the Apple instructions.
Basically, the computer crashes after sleep mode. I've tried all the fixes I've read on the net. Here is the report thread from the last crash. Does it mean anything or throw any light on the problem to anyone?

Thanks,

David Wright

HI,

*"I've tried all the fixes I've read on the net."*

If you posted the trouble shooting that you've tried it help us to not duplicate...

*"I also have a mac book running identical programs and that IS rock solid on Snow Leopard."*

A desktop Mac and a Macbook are completely different hardware software configurations.

*"Interval Since Last Panic Report: 14 sec"*

Sounds like this is a kernel panic problem. Meaning incompatible software/hardware / drivers / or bad RAM. Go here for Resolving Kernel Panics

Try Resetting the System Management Controller

If that doesn't help, try Resetting the PRAM

I see you posted over here... http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10933064#10933064

Did you try resetting the SMC as Thomas Reed suggested?

Major crashes here, too. After using SL on my MacBook Air for a long time with no problems, I decided to upgrade my primary computer, a MacPro, this week and have had nothing but problems since. Apple promotes SL as making things Better; for my MBA, I agree, but for my MacPro I cannot. The MacPro is two years old and never had a single crash since it was purchased until I installed SL.

The MacPro crashes five times a day, requiring a restart. Usually it is when I am using SketchUp Pro and have iTunes running in Space 2. Though often triggered when using a Connexion Navigator 3D mouse, crashes continued after I uninstalled the mouse.

Spaces also seems to cause trouble. When switching spaces, the four-pane window will appear and eventually the window will stay on screen for 30 seconds or more. A few minutes later, the keyboard stops functioning, but the computer is still accessible through a Wacom tablet and ShuttlePro.

Often, the whole computer freezes; even the clock stops counting, yet iTunes will keep playing. The tablet, keyboards, everything stops working except iTunes. Files that I pressed save for before the crash (even a full minute or more) are not saved.

I have four internal drives and created a Techtool Pro edrive and ran hours of tests. No problems found. Reset PRAM and all the other tricks I could think of. Problems persist.

Anybody got any ideas?

Since the post, I have tried all these things; Resolving Kernel Panics, Resetting the System Management Controller, Resetting the PRAM. Of course I run disc utility repair permissions as well, ofter!

I've unplugged everything EXCEPT my 30" apple monitor, keyboard and mouse and the problems still persist. You'll appreciate that I'm using this computer in my self employed business, so constant 'time out' is becoming less and less amusing!

I originally installed snow leopard on a 500gb drive and had problems and issues. I subsequently bought new drives and reinstalled on a 1TB drive, same problems. All my software is registered professional up-to-date software - ilife and iworks, Logic Pro, Apperture, Photoshop.

Most of the time these crashes, which seize up the computer, occur when most of these applications are not even in use.

The crashes happen after waking from sleep mode when going into mail, or safari, or firefox, or system preferences, in fact, whatever the first application opened, is the application that crashes.

I took it to my local Mac dealer this last week and they had it on test for two days and fixed a few issues, but as soon as I got it back here in my studio, the problems started up again. I'm taking it back on Monday and I'm getting suspicious of the monitor!!

Thanks for the comments though.

The problem has been identified as the RME fireface400 audio driver. I've spent some considerable time experimenting to identify the culprit. It's clear that this is what is causing all my problems since Snow Leopard. Whether it's exclusively the drivers fault or partly also due to a conflict with apple SL, I don't know, but I have crash reports if apple want to see them. I also made some more interesting observations this morning regarding an RME file seemingly reappearing after deletion (/Library/LaunchAgents/de.rme-audio.firefaceAgent.plist) which might explain the crashes when waking from sleep mode. I don't know if this is of use to fellow crash sufferers, but thought I'd post it anyway. I seem to have my system nice and stable at the moment, but I might try the 'using after sleep mode' scenario later this week and post the results.

From your first post, it appears you are using Fireface audio driver version 2.64. RME released a new Snow Leopard compatible driver (version 2.65) last December. It is available at RME: Downloads. (There is also a firmware updater for the Fireface 400 there, which you might want to check out.)

It isn't at all unusual for a new OS version to require new drivers for third party hardware. References to this can be found all over the web, in "read me" files & other documentation, etc. -- it doesn't just apply to OS X but to Windows & other OS's as well. (One of the biggest problems with Vista was poor third party driver support.) In fact, the X-Lab "Resolving Kernel Panics" article specifically cautions users to make sure all such drivers are current. See section 6.1 of that article for more details.

I don't know if you missed all this somehow, but if you haven't already downloaded & installed the new RME driver (& possibly the firmware update as well), then do so now. While you are at it, check for other similar updates for any other third party hardware devices you use, using the info in section 6.1 of the X-Lab article as a guide.

Hopefully, this will resolve your issue, which (as already mentioned) is kernel panics, not crashes. If you still have problems, post more about them, being mindful of the difference between application crashes & kernel panics. Because they are fundamentally different, they have different cures, so we will need to know which type they are to offer effective help.
