Why is my screen randomly turning black?

I have had my mac for about two years. When I extend my screen up the screen goes black. This also happens sometimes when I first open up my macbook and my screen stays black until I move the screen up and down numerous times. I was wondering why this may be happening and how much it is to fix (roughly). Thanks!

Macbook (White), Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Hi Kaycee,

Welcome to Apple Discussions. If you're having to fidget with the display lid in order to get video that's a good indication that there's an issue that's hardware related. Usually this is caused by the inverter board, located behind the "MacBook" text on your display bezel. In addition, there are some situations where it's the LVDS cable not properly seated.

I vote you take the machine into the shop and have it looked at by an Apple Service Provider or Apple Retail Store.
