What exactly is in this folder? I have 28.6GB of data in there and my iPhone is my. My old backups are valuable to, however I'm not sure it's quite worth nearly 30GB of space. Could someone clue me in as to what specifically these individual files are? Thank you!

They are backups. Delete what you don't want to keep by going to iTunes prefs - Syncing.

oops sorry - my iphone backups are my life as it were...very important. I realized they are backups but I guess how do I know what backups are ones I should keep around versus useless ones? I guess I'm kind of nervous about deleting backups...

p.s. thank you for the screenshot

If your iPhone had everything you need/want on it the last few times you backed up, you can delete everything previous to those.
