iTunes chrases mid sync CPU 100% Windows 7 64bit

Running iTunes 9.0.2.25 and everything seems to work fine until I perform a sync or drag and drop music to my iPod or iPhone? It stops mid transfer, unmounts the device and then CPU Usage goes 100% and I have to struggle to get the OS to shut down, a few times I've had to do a hard shutdown / crash. I've tried a few tips and tricks I've come across, disabled USB selective suspend under power options, made sure some of my usb drivers were up to date and uninstalled iTunes then reinstalled. No improvement. Sometimes it'll complete but most the times if I drag an album to the iPod it'll transfer about three songs and freeze.

HP Pavilion dv66704NR laptop, came with 32bit Vista and upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit. Everything worked fine on 32 bit Vista. Is there any debugging I can do?

Doublechecking ... did your configuration of that model come with an nVidia chipset? (I'm finding it a bit difficult to determine that from your product specs and drivers and downloads pages at HP.)

If so, see the following Microsoft document:

[You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972]

I'm not sure if it uses that chipset but I will verify when I get home in a few hours. I can say that I've got external hard drives, five or so jumpdrives, and multiple memory cards and I've had no problems transfering to and from them. Just moved 18gb onto one of the drives last night so I'd hate to think it's a general USB transfer issue.
Thanks and I'll update soon.

PS: The model number should be DV6704NR, I added an extra 6 by mistake.
They're sometime refered to as HP Pavilion DV6000 series entertainment laptops.

🙂 It's okay, Mr Skull. You had the correct model number down in your system information, so I was able to work it out. You're actually well ahead of the play here ... given the way that it isn't entirely clear on an HP what is the series number and what is the model number, I pretty commonly have to doublecheck with HP owners which particular model of a given series they have. (Once had to do that for a person who worked for HP.)

I was having trouble seeing the Windows 7 drivers and downloads pages for your DV6704NR, but noticed mention of an nVidia chipset in the Vista downloads pages. But given the way that configurations can vary "inside" a specific model line, I think it's prudent that we doublecheck prior to applying any hotfixes.

I don't see Nvidia usb EHCI under any of the USB controllers in device manager?
I have Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller and under it's properties and details none of the values when scrolled through mention nvidia.
Same goes for the Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller.
Am I looking in the wrong spot or overlooking where it would be described? Could it be generic windows drivers in one of these that should be a Nvidia driver....?

The video card and networking controller are both from Nvidia but I'd hate to assume.
If the HotFix can be undone I'm willing to give it a try and see if it helps or should I worry about trying a driver for the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB H.C. first?
I've transferred lots of gigs over the usb devices and the only time I have problems is with iTunes and wifeys iPod / my iPhone.
Sorry for so many questions but thank you so much for the help!

🙂 No problems about the further questions.

The term EHCI roughly means "USB 2.0 host controller". So pretty much any modern nVidia chipset will have one of those. So the issue ends up boiling down to whether or not you've got an nVidia chipset, I think.

I went searching through the HP Support forums, and I found a user-supplied FAQ that suggests that you do have an nVidia chipset. See Daniel's second post in this thread (the one on chipset drivers):

[Windows7 Upgrade Guide for dv6000/dv9000 models|http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/Windows7-Upg rade-Guide-for-dv6000-dv9000-models/td-p/179816]

... but "suggests" isn't quite the same thing as "confirms".

I'm thinking it might be worth posting over at the HP Support forums and asking if you have one of the HP models that requires the update for Windows 7 described in the following post. (The update in question is actually the same as the Microsoft hotfix I linked you to earlier.)

[Driver update for Win7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available|http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for- Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipset-systems-now/m-p/188193]

(Not trying to get rid of you here ... I just want to get you on the radar screens of people with a bit more specific knowledge about the chipset on your particular HP model. I figure the HP forums would be a useful place to go for that.)

Hi folks,

I have a completely different machine running Windows 7 32 bit. iTunes was locking up so hard that the process could not be terminated in the Task Manager. I have never known ANY application to behave this way.

The Windows machine refused to shutdown completely and when forcibly reset, had trouble booting back into Windows 7.

The fault was tracked down to a dicky external USB hard drive where my songs are kept. As soon as I switched that off, iTunes came back to life.

I'm about 100% sure it's a nVidia chipset as I noticed earlier I was having the "yellow coprocessor" issue in my device manager. I did a quick search yesterday and thought it was a issue with the video card I was going to tackle next.
I installed the SP37730 driver for the chipset mentioned on the other forum for the nVidia chipset and it took care of the yellow coprocessor issue!

I'll install the USB Windows seven fix (SP44620), cross fingers, swing chicken over head, sacrifice virgin over grill, and return with an update later or tomorrow : )

Thanks again!
