I am attempting to convert an audio file using QT into aiff so that i can import it into a Final Cut Pro project. However, I am having trouble converting this file.

I assume you have QT Pro, since you have FCP. Open the movie in QT Player and then use Export. The Export drop-down menu should include a choice to export Sound to AIFF. You can adjust the export settings (sampling rate, etc) by clicking on the Options button.
I have Quick Time Player. I am able to convert Mp3 files using that method, but when I try to export the M4a file, I the program continues to lock up {the dreaded beach ball}!
Should I be using another program (QT Pro?) and if so, can I download this?

If your m4a file is a purchased to use audio file from iTunes Music Store or any other source, it is copy protected and QT Pro will not convert it. The beachball will spin because the recognition flags etc. are "blocked".
Boy am I confused.
The audio format of most CD's is
already in .aiff format. Just drag it off the CD.
.m4a files can also be "converted" to .aiff via QuickTime (or even in iTunes).
.m4p files (protected) are purchased songs and QuickTime will not convert them. iTunes can be used to create an audio CD (back to .aiff) however.
The last possible problem is the "protected" CD's from Sony. I don't know if they "lock" the individual files or they entire CD.
