I purchased new computer becouse old computer died. I can't connect to old computer to sync ipod touch or obtain any files or updates apps etc. I would like to sync Ipod touch to my new computer from ipod and save all user information that is currently on ipod and not loose all apps updates and music etc. I tried to sync to new computer earlier and lost all this inforomation. old computer was still functioning at time and recovered ipod with sync to old computer. now old computer is dead and I am afraid to sync to new computer and loose all info on ipod not currently on new computer. how do I sync ipod to new computer so it duplicates itself on new computer rather than empty computer duplicating itself to ipod?

The ipod touch is not a backup device.

Where is your backup? You need to use your backup to move the info to your new computer, then sync.

When you sync to a new computer, your ipod will be erased.

    Go to www.copytoy.com

It should allow you to transfer everything from your iPod to your new computer without much hassle.

    Thanks for the Copytoy.com info!
I have the same problem: sync'ed computer dead; backup file on dead computer; want to sync ipod touch to new computer and not lose everything!

Does CopyToy.com work for Apps as well?

Apple should definitely address this. Seems like there should be a way to backup ipod to new computer, and only allow that content to go back to same ipod.

    Welcome to the discussions,

To copy all purchases from your ipod to your new computer you'll need to do this:
Make sure your computer is authorized in the Store menu in iTunes and autosync is disabled. Connect to your laptop, right click on your ipod in the device list and choose "transfer purchases". This will copy your bought media and apps to your new computer.
Your settings and data are part of the backup. To back up manually right click on your device again and choose "backup". See what's included in a backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Set up at least one event and contact on your computer to be able to merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
Restore your settings and other data using the manual backup you made before.

Transferring music you did not buy in iTunes is not supported by Apple, there is 3rd party softeware out there: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
