Want to play iTunes library over home stereo speakers. Connected HDMI cable from AppleTV to TV and RCA outputs from AppleTV to pre-amp but music plays through TV. How do I get music to play through home stereo speakers? Thanks.
It sounds to me like you have to choose the correct input on the amp maybe? Does it have input choices, like TV, or DVD etc? Also, you might have to mute the TV speakers. I think you have it going through the amp on the TV input and that is why? It's hard to know for sure without being familiar with your amp and setup.
The way I handle this is by using Airtunes. I have an Airport Express so I can connect my stereo input directly to the Airport Express router. Then, through Apple TV, when I choose music, I can choose if I want to sent the music via Airtunes. This then comes through my stereo speakers. It does add some expense to purchase an Airport Express but it is very simple to make it work.
I'm not sure TV will output through both methods at the same time after the V3 upgrade of the software. You might try disconnecting the HDMI cable from the TV box and see if the sound starts working through the stereo/RCA connection.
Are you able to connect your pre-amp to your TV? I'm playing the Apple TV through my speakers this way. I have my Apple TV connected to my Onkyo 875 receiver. Video is via component and audio is optical. The receiver is connected to my TV via HDMI.
