iMac 24" Display problem

Hi,

Im having display problem with my iMac 24" Early 2008.

I cant boot, after 20 seconds the OS freeze.

I ran a full diagnostic with the Hardware Test...no error.

1 - connect an external display; if the external display works ok then there may be a problem with your iMac's display panel or perhaps the inverter board. If the external display does not work then the problem may be with the graphics chip on the logic board.

2 - try booting from the OS X installation DVD? Will it boot that way?

3 - did you recently upgrade to Snow Leopard? If so, did this problem start immediately after upgrading? If you upgraded, did you do an erase & install; or an archive & install?

4 - do you have AppleCare coverage?

1. The external display dont work (no signal)

2. Nop. The iMac freeze.

3. My HD crashed 2 months ago. I changed the HD and reinstalled a fresh Snow Leopard.

4. My 1 year warranty ended 8 months ago... 😟

Did this problem start when you replaced your HD?

Has your iMac been running ok up to now, and did this problem just start recently? If so, is there anything you changed in your Mac (hardware or software) right before the problem started?

Did you replace the HD yourself; or did a repair shop do it for you?

Can you run Apple Hardware Test again? Do all the memory & display/graphics tests available.

The problem started this week after a bad bluescreen in Windows 7 in bootcamp.

I changed the HD myself, im IT technician.

I will check if there is more test i can run with the Hardware Test.

1. The iMac freeze when i try to boot in safe mode.

2. The SMC reset doesn't work.

3. No i can't boot with DVD OS X.

I tried to boot with Ubuntu DVD, i can hear the DVD charging the OS but i see nothing, just a black screen...

I think the video card is death...

Six months after the end of waranty the HD was dead and now the video card...i think i bought a lemon. :S

Any other ideas ?

What video card is in the machine (sorry too lazy to research it).

If it is a 7300 or 7600 Nvidia try this http://support.apple.com/kb/DL978

Hi,

It's a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 512 MB. It was the first crash in Win7. The video card was doing a great job, i played Dragon Age with max settings without any lag.

Zapping the PRAM is the first thing i tried. 🙂

Finally, the video card was dead.

I paid 450$ for repairs. 😟

I do not suggest ever Apple product without AppleCare to my users.

Unfortunately Apple products with AppleCare are too expensive ...
