How do you get Numbers to read CSV data?

I downloaded data in Comma Separated Value (CSV) format - most likely created in Windows - and pasted the data in Numbers. Numbers combined the data in single rows without creating separate columns for items separated by comma. Numbers just ignored the commas. How can I get Numbers to accept the data as CSV so that I can sort and manipulate the data?

Reading carefully the *Numbers User Guide*, you would know that Numbers is able to import CSV files, not to accept a clipboard containing CSV datas.

I wish to add that CSV files aren't always containing comma separated values.
Numbers is able to import two kinds of CSV files.
If the decimal separator in use is the period, values must be separated by commas.
If the decimal separator in use is the comma, values must be separated by semi-colons.
