Lexmark X4580 Under Snow

My Lexmark X4580 was working great under Snow on my mini. But hung up on my 17" MBP with a "supplies level" non-existant document in the print queue ... I had to PAUSE the printer, then RESUME to get docs printed.

A call to Lexmark was fruitful. They have a LexmarkNetworking1.10.16.dmg file to clear that "supplies" nonsense ... AFTER moving all these files to the Trash:

1. HD > Library > Printers - drag the Lexmark folder to Trash.
2. HD > Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources - drag the Lexmark files to Trash.
3. HD > Library > Receipts - drag the Lexmark files to Trash.
4. HD > Library > Applications Support - Lexmark files to Trash.
5. HD > Library > Image Capture > TWAIN Data Sources - drag Lexmark file to Trash.
6. HD > System > Library > Extensions folder - drag Lexmark files to Trash.
7. Empty Trash.
8. Open Disk Utility and repair Disk Permissions.
9. Reboot.

Then install the LexmarkNetworking1.10.16.dmg patch.

THEN download and install their Snow Leopard driver package.

Both my machines are now working as they should: wirelessly printing with no "hangups" like I was experiencing.

Thank you clintbradford!

This method (conducted in that order) worked to fix my x6570. I downloaded a ton of Lexmark drivers looking for the 1.10.16 version of the Lexmark Networking file.

"LexmarkNetworking" can be extracted from the Pro800 Series Web Installer (Pro800SeriesWebInstaller1.0.15.dmg) available on the Lexmark website. You can either either use "Pacifist" and extract /Lexmark Extras/10.6/Pro800-Pro900 Networking.pkg or simply mount the .dmg and use "Show Package Contents" to drill down to the 10.6 directory and drag the package to the desktop.

Once the package is extracted, double-click to install.

I followed the instructions here:

http://support.lexmark.com:80/lexmark/index?page=content&productCode=&segment=SU PPORT&viewlocale=enUS&searchid=1269982916600&actp=search&userlocale=ENUS&id=SO5118

One thing that I notice in the description on the above page is that this applies to inkjet printers. My printer is a laser printer.

I also downloaded from the other link; in both cases, the same new file was installed. This one:

LexmarkNetBackend.app

I did delete the printer before the install and then re-added it.

The only fix that I found was to switch the drive to the generic postscript driver. But, that's not ideal.

I suppose that I could go in and remove files by hand as described in this thread. However, there was no mention of that on the Lexmark site.

I tried again (moving the files out of the way instead of deleting in case I needed to go back).

Same result.

Perhaps my issue is somewhat different. In my case, it doesn't have anything to do with wireless printing or network printing. Just going to my attached usb printer. I've contact lexmark to see if they have a suggestion.

Well, this is what I heard from Lexmark:

+The link that you give us : http://support.lexmark.com/index?page=content&productCode=&segment=SUPPORT&viewl ocale=enUS&searchid=1269982916600&actp=search&userlocale=ENUS&id=SO5118+

+Is applicable only for inkjet printer that is network connected and with color and black inks. So it's not basically an issue with the laser printer E310 that you have since E310 uses black toner printer. Also try to check that supply error if it displays the "black toner level" of the E310. For the driver u can use the built in Mac OS X driver the Generic Postscript printer driver because that is the driver provided by MAC to work for the Lexmark E310 printer.+

Sounds like this fix is not meant to solve my problem. On the other hand, they don't acknowledge that the built in mac driver exhibits similar symptoms. I've switched to Generic Postscript and will use that until I notice an update.

I should probably start another, printer specific, thread in order to make other users of this (aged) printer aware.
