Can't control "Follow Pitch & Tempo"

My name is Nick. I've been using garageband for about 2 years now, and am just recently running into my first problem. I'm trying to record a real instrument, say voice, and I create a track. I make sure Follow pitch & Tempo is unselected, but as soon as I click record, Follow Pitch and tempo selects itself, and I can't unselect it. This distorts my voice and makes me sound a little... robotic. I'm very frustrated and can't figure out what to do.

check your Audio MIDI Setup utility, make sure your interface is set to 44.1k, and 16-bit (or 24-bit of you've set GB's prefs for its highest resolution)

as a side note, just to check things, you can uncheck the "Follow..." checkBox after recording... ALL of GB's effects are rendered in real time during playback, not during recording:

I'm also having the same problem recording Guitars and Bass.

whatever the issue is, yes, any audio recording would be affected, the instrument producing the sound would be irrelevant. i'm just not sure of exactly what you're describing, so the only thing that jumps to mind is a mismatch between what the interface is sending and what GB expects.
