Q: No Sound in iTunes.

Hello, I'm running OSX 10.6.2 and my iTunes app has recently refused to... well, play tunes. The play header moves, but there's no sound on music or movies. I checked the volume slider, it's all the way up. I've tried deleting and reinstalling. I thought maybe deleting and restoring from my Time Capsule would work, but no go. iTunes has no sound.

Any ideas as to why? Thanks in advance.

Rule it out. My iTunes & library are on the internal HD of my Vista PC.

Me too, or are we up to me three or me four by now. Very annoying. Media is on an external drive, has been for years. Using airplay to airport express units in multiple rooms, typically not using My Computer speakers, but have been testing this problem with them now. Sometimes I get 1 song before the sound disappears, sometimes 2. A similar problem was present several years ago, but then it typically only happened after many hours of playback - would come back and notice music was not playing, thinking the playlist was over, bringing it up to start a new playlist and find the old one still playing silently. And then it went away when a new update was installed. But now it's back. Will continue to test different configurations and different computers to see if there are any commonalities.

If Sonos was less expensive I would have bought one this weekend. I really miss listening to music in all the rooms in the house and I have gotten used to it. For the record, I use OS X 10.8 to run iTunes and I recently apgraded OS X and iTunes to latest possible version. I also upgraded all my airports. The AppleTV seems to work fins, though, for video. But, music from my Mac to the ATV behaves in the same way...

    Please Apple FIX!

Hello! I was having this problem and was freaking out also! No, I did not go and buy a PC. (Thankfully) The following worked on my Mac:

    1. Open iTunes

    2. Go to iTunes Preferances

    3. Go to Playback

    4. Select "Sound Check"

This is a work-around that worked for me, though I'm not completely sure if that was what actually fixed it... But there's no harm for anyone else to try it! Hope I helped!

That might all work for a mac but on a windows machine you need to go into itunes and at the top click edit and pick prefrences then platyback setting go to the bottom and select the drop down of play audio using : and make sure windows audio session is picked not direct sound. direct sound will only work on videos and not music and viedos.

    Update:

I tried arielleira's suggestion about the sound check option and I haven't noticed the problem since.  Makes me think there is a programing bug.

    Thanks arielleira.

I actually moved the library to a Win 8 machine this X-mas and the problem is gone. No stops and no silence. Besides from the change of computer the set up is identical. The library is on the same external HD and the network is the same.

    I have:

    Updated iTunes

    Restarted iTunes

    Restarted the computer (Vista)

    Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes

Tried every single fix suggested in this thread

    My music doesn't play.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple owes me three grand. Because my music won't play in any other program, either.

I clicked on the Apple TV icon at the top left hand side, clicked multiple and my computers sound was turned off. I clicked on the computer icon and the sound came back.

The sound continues to go out while watching any tv show or movie on iTunes. I have tried every remedy with no success. I'm that I just recently rented "12 Years A Slave" and I have to log out of iTunes about every 10 minutes because the sound goes out. FRUSTRATING. Worse, I just purchased AHS:Coven season and having the same ISSUE. Asking for my money back since there isn't an obvious fix!

Thank you kdayz!  This is the solution for those who have Apple TV!  It was baffling trying to figure out every other "solution" presented on the forums.  THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER FOR APPLE TV USERS who can not control the volume using the default iTunes volumn control!   Thanks.

I had the same problem. No sound out of my iMac speakers in iTunes. Issue was with AirPlay. It was set to my Apple TV. As soon as I changed it to Computer, I have sound thru my iMac speakers again!

When I ran the iTunes update in August 2014 to version 11.3.1, I lost my audio.  I had never had that occur after an iTunes update.  Apparently, the Apple TV/Computer switch was toggled in the update.

    Thanks for posting a solution.

On the recent Yosemite and iTunes 12 updates (October 2014) my iTunes demonstrated same problem: no sound.

Went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > SOUND and selected my preferred OUTPUT (which in my case is an AudioBox interface, not the default internal speakers).

So, either the Yosemite or iTunes updated flipped it back to defaults - I just had to undo that, and bingo!
