Computer Won't Recognize iPod

My 5th generation iPod Nano (one month old) suddenly is not syncing when I plug it into the computer. It is charging, so I know the USB cord and the USB ports are working. But the computer won't recognize it (i.e., it doesn't show up in iTunes and the iPod screen doesn't change).

I tried the 4 of the 5 "r's" in the support section, and my last option is to just reformat it and erase everything, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

I searched the forum but I didn't see this issue. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello Anastasia,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

Have you tried forcing the iPod into Disk Mode as described in this Apple support document?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

Otherwise, I would work through each of these troubleshooting solutions as necessary. You will want to skip the section regarding the 5 R's and move to the potential solutions below that. These will include things such as trying a different USB cable, plugging the iPod into a different USB port, as well as resetting the iPod while its connected to your computer.

This is happening to me for the second nano in a row - bought first one in November and after intial sync itunes would not recognise it again. Went through 5 Rs myself then with advisor on helpline. Nothing. Uninstalled software and reinstalled. Still same problem. Rang back another 30-40 minute phone call explaining to advisor I had already gone through the Rs/uninstall with previous advisor but he just stuck top script. I then noticed that since going through all the restore actions etc all music on the pod was now sectioned off in "other" files!!!Completely unaccessible. Apple decided to replace it at that point.

Got new one 1 month ago. Initially connected ok the once again few weeks later itunes will not recognise it.

I'm not prepared to go round in circles again or have the pod 'lose' it's files again and since there is another person on this forum with this problem I'm now wondering if this is a common issue with these new 5th Gen Nanos? My ipod shuffle is connecting, being recognised and synching as normal so it's obviously a problem with the Nanos.

About time someone sorted this out as there are at least 3 of us reporting the same problem.

By the way my PC had a full health check last week including USB ports and infection check it is A ok.

Im having the same problem with my new nano 5th gen. i even went into an apple store and asked if them what i should do, but he claimed there was obviously somethign wrong with my laptop!! :@ as it was connecting to the macs in store! but my laptop is fine and as so many ppl are also having this problem there must be a problem with the connection to xp and vista. but apple are refusing to acknowledge it, its so frustrating. there must be some software fault on itunes for windows or somthing.. :S

I myself took my ipod and connected it to a friend's pc where it was recognised, then when I brought it back here my pc did pick it up and synched successfull - it was only when I tried again a week later with my pc I was back to the "not recognised" error message.

Interestingly enough I bought a second hand 4th Gen classic yesterday, connected that to pc and synched. Tried the 5th Gen Nano afterwards and it synched no problems. Tried it again this morning and itunes is consistently recognising the 5th Gen pod now.

Unfortunate I had to pay out almost the same again to get to this point.
Apple please sort this out it isn't fair - when I heard the media stuff about your new ipad I cringed. You can't have such a high profile and then not respond when your customers are having genuine problems.

You have something going on with your software.

Also make sure you are not connecting the ipod to a USB hub. Connect it directly to your system. It could also be a conflict with some other USB device you have connected. So to make sure, connect only the iPod and your keyboard and mouse at first.

It could also be an issue with Apple Mobile Device Manager. Older iPods don't need it, but newer ones do. It is installed when you install iTunes 9. So if you still are having issues at this point, try reinstalling itunes. Here is an article about how to do it:

I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes when my initial 5th Gen nano had problems right from the word go. It didn't fix things at all and yes I did follow the instructions which were sent my email address by the apple advisor. At the time I also tried just about every USB port on my PC with a direct connection it made no difference at all. Before you ask my shuffle is recognised fine via the same ports too (and I had them all checked and texted last week as part of a pc health check).

I've been going all around the internet trying to find ways for my computer to reconize my new iPod Nano. it still wont work, but the most success that most people are having is when they follow these steps. It wont work for me, but I might be doing it wrong.

Open iTunes, and have your iPod hooked onto your computer.
Hold down the menu button with the direction key until you see the apple logo
When you see the apple logo just hold on the play button with the menu button.
When the screen goes black let go of the play button, and when iTunes reconizes your iPod you can finally let go of the menu button. And on iTunes you can reset your iPod.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but it seems to work with a lot of people.

And what's this about not hooking it up to the USB port? Is there another spot I can hook up my iPod? Cause there's two ports on the front of the computer, does it really matter which one I hook it up to?

By the way! Apple needs to include some REAL instructions when you get an iPod, because it doesn't even say where to hook it up at... Just saying...

My 5th gen Nano was working great until I updated iTunes the last time they asked me to. Now it is not recognized with three different Apple USB cords that came with three of my iPods.

iTunes still recognizes the 2nd gen Nano I gave to one of my kids, my fiancé's 3rd gen Nano, and the 5th gen iPod I just bought him. But not my 5-month-old Nano he bought for me. I have tried everything. First, all updated are installed for my OS, no viruses or malware are on the system. Second, iTunes was, of course, fully updated at the time. Third, I know the Nano itself is working because it will charge through the wall and in the van, and when I don't have iTunes installed at all, the Nano driver will install correctly on my laptop and is recognized as an Apple device in Device Manager. When I reinstall iTunes (the 64-bit version), however, the Nano is no longer recognized.

When I tried uninstalling iTunes, I did uninstall the other five programs that come with it (Quicktime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and Apple Application Support) as directed by tech support over the phone. I've done everything except completely wiping my Nano, which I don't want to do as I have some pictures my kids recently took with it that haven't been transfered to my laptop yet. But even if I did wipe it, who's to say this won't happen again as there is obviously an issue here.

Also, when I did the disk mode, my Nano never accepted it right. It never did say "Do Not Disconnect" as it was supposed to but was stuck on "OK to disconnect" instead.

Has anybody figured out how to fix this yet? Any help at all will be much appreciated.
