making video calls using iPhone 3gs

Hi,
I recently own a new iPhone 3GS 32 GB. I just carried by the name 3GS and expected a front Camera. I did not really check for it while buying. After all I realized that I can not make video calls using iPhone 3GS. Why is this limitation on such a great phone? is there any other way to make video calls on iPhone 3GS??

That means a camera function and a video calling function are mutually exclusive.

Not at all. Every phone I've seen with video calling has two cameras - one facing away for taking photos, and another front-facing camera for video calls.

For example, see both cameras on this video calling phone:

On most such phones, you can switch between the cameras whilst on a call to show the caller what you are seeing while still being able to see them.

I don't think I've ever seen a video call capable cell phone in the US.

Really? I think my last 4 phones have been capable of video calls - not that I ever used the feature.

AT&T sell at least one phone capable of video calling (in Europe), but it's not mentioned as a feature by them in the US:

It seems the US misses out on a lot of fairly standard features we get in Europe...

Video calling is not very popular here even on computers with webcams. I guess Americans aren't terribly interested in seeing the person on the other end of the line or being seen.

Exactly my reasons for never having used the feature!! 🙂

When the first 3G networks went live in Europe early last decade Video Calling was touted as the next big thing, but it never took off - despite it being a standard feature on most 3G phones sold here. Another technology looking for users!

3G is a wireless communications technology designed to provide high-speed Internet access and transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia. video calls is just one of multitude of uses for 3G.

Video calls never took off properly for serveral reasons, here is some http://sachendra.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/why-havent-video-calls-mobile-video-te lephony-taken-off/

I always had a phoenwith video calls and never used it. however, as I mentioned it is faster ommunication technology and great for internet.
