Q: pismo kernel panic

I wanted to install Panther on my Pismo with OS 9 running, but the CD did not show on the desktop or as bootable. So I put the Pismo in firewire mode and partitioned it with my iMacs disc utility. I then made a bootable copy of my Panther onto one partition. However, by restarting holding down option it did not show up. Then I connected the Pismo to a external firewire harddrive which contains a proven bootable copy , but this time it showed the drive as bootable but froze showing " login window waiting". I zapped the PRAM and repeated the procedure, this time the kernel panic window showed. I just hope so much I did not ruin the Pismo, I bought it on ebay and had no use for the OS 9 it came with.

imac G3, Pismo 500/768/, ibook G3 600/640, Mac OS X (10.3.x), imac G3 snow 600 Mhz/640 Mb Ram

I'm guessing that you used a gray install disc from another model Mac. You have to use a retail Panther CD or Tiger DVD installer that's black with a white/silver X.

See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? .

Your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 The update should be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X. However, I bought my Pismo used with Tiger installed, but the firmware update was not installed. Later I installed the update.

How much RAM is installed? OS X is picky about RAM quality, whereas OS 9 is more tolerant. RAM problems can cause a kernel panic.

Yes first I tried to install Tiger with a copy of an installer disc that could have been a wrong one as it did not work. However then I tried to use my correct Panther installer CD, which on OS9 did not show up on the desktop and also would not boot from by pressing c while starting. Thats why I did the firewire target etc.
I did this before transferring my iMacs content to the ibook, it worked then.
I have 768 Ram installed, the partition is 30Gb.

Since you don't need OS 9, just boot using the retail Panther/Tiger install disc, erase the hard drive & then install OS X.

look, the problem is : Tiger DVD probably model specific, cannot install from it.
: CD with Panther does not show up as bootable with option
starting and does not boot from with c pressed, though it is
a black retail model and worked on other computers.
Drive probably does not work correctly.

thats why I tried to transfer a system via disk utility and fire wire target mode, which worked on my ibook before, but not with the Pismo.
Thats why I wonder whether there is something wrong with it ( other than the drive), because it also does not boot from ext harddrive with Panther on it.
Want to know before I buy Tiger retail DVD.
