Of course there is a way to find it - you can actually look for it... you know, using those great optical devices in the front of your head.

You CAN locate it through WIFI if someone stole it or you lost it at a place with WIFI like starbucks and if you want to know if someone stole it or dropped it and someone found it etc., then you can buy a MobileMe and you can track it. But you need to plug it in to your computer then it will do what it does then if you lose it, go to Me.com>Find my iPod (second to last icon on top)>Type in password>then you can see where what WIFI your iPod is in. This only works if your iPod is on, and all the settings on your iPod is on. But it doesn't find its EXACT location. If you know its in your house then it won't help you.

"Tracking by mobileme" would NOT find it in your home.

Mobileme could find the location that the wi-fi router to which the ipod is connected (if it is connected). At best you could see the street address of the wi-fi router where your ipod is located.

Ok, I'm not familiar with the whole "iThing" world, but my son set his iTouch down somewhere Saturday night and it was not turned in to any lost and found depts. I believe he registered it online when he originally purchased it and it has been synched to our PC via itunes. It has also been connected to our wireless router at home. From what I read above, is it true that it might be possible to locate it if it's connected to a wifi router and is turned on? Or would that mobileme app need to be purchased and the ipod linked to it BEFORE he lost it, for it to work? Are there other apps that would work after the fact? Is it possible to locate it via the MAC address (if my router actually stores that info) or when he registered it online or with itunes, was the required info stored? Is it possible that we might still be able to locate it? My son loves his itouch and has been very responsible with it until this incident. We can't afford to buy him another one right now, so if I could find his old one, that would be awesome! One other thing, he has it password protected. I know there's password crackers for everything else, so I'm sure if someone wanted to, they could probably get past that, but would that change the possibility of finding it? Thanks in advance!

Okay--

One: There is nothing at all that can trace a lost/stolen iPod after the fact. Period.

Two: MobilMe has a widget--but you have to buy it first, install it on the iPod, then once it is missing, hope that someone will turn it on when you happen to be there so you can wipe it.

Three: Password encryption was a good idea. If it was picked up by a petty thief, they won't take time to crack it. And without the computer it's synched to available to redo/reset everything, it will likely stay down unless that number is picked off. With four digits, that might take a few days.

It's sad to hear about the loss...hopefully, it's at home somewhere.

Again, you have to +install it first!+ If you don't have it installed before the iPod goes missing, there is simply no way to track it. +"Nothing at all can trace a lost/stolen iPod after"+ still holds true if you haven't thought ahead to install such a program. (My grammar may be off, but my facts hold up.)

Having said that...the program in question will work far better for the iPhone. (Especially that "Push" part.) While this will work for iPod touches, it would have to be on at some point in wi-fi range, at least based on what I read on the page you recommended.

It is a bold statement--and though the grammar was bad, the gist is meant to cut through petty stuff and false hope. Sounds way too cruel, I know. But...I also know what it's like to have stuff stolen, and at gunpoint to boot. (It reeks.)

Theft is wrong. Hoping that there is a miracle program to load on a computer that will find the missing iPod after it's been stolen by tracking it down via wi-fi or 3G--without loading it first on the iPod--is counterproductive and also about as wrong. If the unit is really missing and presumed stolen, at this point a police report really should be filed.

there is no wrong or right on the forum. we are voicing our opinions, try to give options, and try to help.

We too had an ipod that was left somewhere for no longer than 10 minutes, it was taken, it did have a lock on it, but what is really irritating is that when the Apple store was contacted to see what they do if someone brings in a touch because they "cant unlock it" they just unlock it...no questions asked!!!! What is the point of placing a lock for security if Apple isn't going to question an unlock request...the products are registered, if would be simple to pull the registration number up and see who it is registered under and confirm identification!!!!
