help! 120GB ipod has been rendered unusable...

2 nights ago, I connected my ipod to my computer, and it began syncing and charging like normal. However, when I shut the computer down, I noticed that the ipod had frozen to the main menu screen. I restarted it like normal to discover I now have no music or videos (or any files for that matter) saved to my ipod. Furthermore, when I enter the about page, it says that 66GB of space has been used, but this is now catagorised under "other" rather than "music" or "images" etc.

Now, when I connect my ipod, it appears in my computer, but fails to show up in devices. So although I can charge my ipod, I can't sync it, or reset in to factory settings.

I am convinced that the problem is with the ipod and not the computer, as I have tried 2 different computers, and the ipod doesn't show up in itunes on either of them.

If anyone has any suggestions, or ways to reset the ipod without itunes, please enlighten me 😀

p.s. i also tried formatting, but it doesn't seem to do anything once i press start.

ok, I just found a record log of a system error in the ipod called "BOOTEX".
I totally forgot about this until now, but there was a system error when I turned my computer after my ipod froze.

This is what the notepad document says:

"Checking file system on F:
The type of the file system is FAT32.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume Serial Number is 3141-5926
Unrecoverable error in folder \iPod_Control\iTunes.
Convert folder to file (Y/N)? Yes
Removing trailing folder entries from \iPod_Control\Device
Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)? Yes
292512 KB in 18 recovered files.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.
116966448 KB total disk space.
912 KB in 57 hidden files.
336 KB in 21 folders.
67962272 KB in 8603 files.
49002912 KB are available.

16384 bytes in each allocation unit.

If anybody knows what this means, or has any fixes, please let me know 🙂.

Sounds like the same problem as everyone else, I'm afraid:

There are a few suggestions on this massive thread that have worked for a few people, but otherwise you're in the same boat as the rest of us, wondering how long to wait for any kind of word from Apple (or even, miracle of miracles, a fix) before going out to buy a different brand of music player. They're too busy launching new gadgets to attend to their existing customers, it seems - and so are losing them in droves.

Seriously, to **** with Apple.

How can a single software update for iTunes cripple every iPod Classic that connects to it. I now have a $250 brick of shyt (that still has music but can't be managed!).

I am convinced that Apple does not care. Even if there is a "patch" how can it be applied to hardware that simply freezes when connected to a computer?

So I'm not alone. My 120gb ipod was working fine. Had nearly 6000 songs on it. I was playing vortex one day and it just froze. It restarted itself and everything was erased.

I plugged it in-wouldn't show up in itunes or My Computer.
It occasionally shows up in My Computer but it freezes when you click on it.
It shows up in device manager with the yellow exclamation point.
When my ipod is plugged in it says connected.
When it's unplugged it scrolls fine but says NO MUSIC but has space taken up on it.

I've tried everything from the 5 Rs.
Fixing the registry
Unistalling the drivers and restarting the computer.
Completely deleting all the Itunes/Apples software completely.
Discovery Mode

Nothing will fix it.

Apparently EVERYONE has this problem and Apple is not doing anything...if EVERYBODY is having this problem...obviously its something else...

Do I sell it for parts now?
