Can't change scratch disk. application freezes

Trying to change my scratch disk.
I select SYSTEM SETTINGS. Click on SET... and then i get the dreaded spinning rainbow wheel.
I just lost two hours of editing. Please help.

imac, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Do you mean you switched the computer off?

I do that every night as it helps refresh everything and stops problems building up.

Or do you mean something else?
