Aluminum Wireless Keyboard arrow key problem after 1.1 update

Thank you to anyone who reads this message.

Hi,

I'm Noticing it right now.....I'll leave that in, I did NOT mean to do that capital N on "noticing" above 🙂

I got the update, 1.1 I believe, yesterday, and now the keyboard is acting "strange". I first noticed the down arrow not WOrkinG...im leaVing these errorS in place! just to show how random its being! it seems now that shift is "holding itself down at times" so I'm getting capitals! Initially I noticed that my page would randomly move down, as if I were holding the down arrow on the keyboard, and I turned off my Magic Mouse in case that was the cause, the problem still happened so its the keyboard.

I think I would like to reinstall the OLD wireless keyboard firmware, as these problems only started after reinstalling the latest firmware. Strange, the errors are not happening right now.....no sudden capitals, and the arrow keys are working right now.

I hope I'm not the only one having this problem, as sick as that sounds! I hope something can be done.

I cant wait for the Tablet tomorrow!

Thank you to anyone who reads this message.

Hello Jay (from NZ, wonderful place!):

There is no way (that I am aware of) to back a firmware update off. FWIW, I installed that update myself and have had no problems (but I am running OS X 10.6.2). Typos are strictly my own.

Does the firmware update show in system preferences>software update?

In any event, try trashing a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting.

Hello Barry,

It seems to be absolutely broken now, I think it started "repeating nonstop" buttons I'd used. So, now its always got "shift held down" so it only does CAPITALS! I walked up town and bought a really awful USB keyboard for the meantime. Its terrible! It has none of the "quality" of my lovely Aluminium Wireless keyboard, but the main thing is that it works for now~!

I dont know how to delete that preference file you mentioned sorry?

I'm really upset, I hope that an update, or a way to reverse the update back to 1.0 comes out. I have the installer for the previous update, but when I try and install it, a box pops up saying something like "you already have this update". If it would just let me reflash the firmware or whatever it does, I'd be fine! Otherwise, my Apple keyboard is simply unusuable, it feels so unfair!

On another note, is the latest event video out yet? I dont see it yet! I like to download them. I was being good and waiting for that video before I found out about the event, but I saw the Apple page today while trying to get my keyboard working before work. Very exciting!

I really would appreciate help.

Thank you for your efforts!

thank you friend, deleting that preference seems to have helped, still not 100% but it seems to have solved the problem somewhat? >>>>>

ok, no it did not help! I was typing the above on the Wireless Apple keyboard, and it was going fine until....it got stuck on all caps...

Yes, sorry for the delay, the update does show under my Software Updates. I wish I could just revert back. Am I the only one in the world having this problem? Its so annoying. I bought this awful cheap no name brand keyboard, the keys "rattle" and feel just awful! It has freaking windows logos on it! Using expose and the windows key for "command" is nuts, and its "in the wrong place" 🙂

When I deleted the bluetooth pref and restarted, it seemed I couldnt use any of my bluetooth devices, Im lucky I had a USB mouse about to go through the bluetooth menus and then the keyboard starting working (before futzing out again) and the Magic Mouse works too now.

Its the keyboard itself thats the problem. I tried pairing it to my PS3 last night, to see if it would do the same problems there. I couldnt get it to pair properly, might have been because I were tired, might have been something the keyboard was doing, I dont know.

My issue seems to be that the shift keys are permanently on, thus all capitals, and using expose etc does the "bullet time effect", which is cute at first but incredibly annoying if you discover every new tab in firefox is opening in a new window in front of the original, and you have to slow motion expose through them all!

Thank you very much for your time.

Hello again:

It is possible that the KB decided to fail - odd timing, but possible. It is also possible that something went wrong with the firmware update. Are you able to download (again) the update that you attempted? If so, try to reapply it (may not work).

This is not the problem, but in system preferences>bluetooth both of the boxes should be checked.

If the KB is less than a year old, call Applecare with a warranty problem. I looked, but Apple apparently has not opened a retail store in NZ (they are good sources of help - especially with hardware problems.

Sorry I could not aim you at a fix 😟

Hi Barry,

Im using the keyboard right now, it seems to sort itself out when I start off with it, before going nuts later on! i havnt used the down arrow and am trying to avoid shift too heh.

It seems so unfair that its gone nuts like this. Its definitely not something Ive done, the update installed fine. I just wish I could redo the update, but again, it says that its already up to date.... and I cant use an older update, you....ok, now I cant use the quotation marks..... it says im up to date.

thank you for your time. im afraid to buy a new apple wireless keyboard....what if it just does the same thing again? not good! This keyboard is probably over a year old...maybe.

Very sad.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your effort. You are a great person.

Hi Jay:

I am sorry the thing is still acting up. The intermittent behavior does seem to indicate a hardware problem, but anything is possible. It would not hurt to call Applecare with a warranty issue. They might decide to replace it if it is about a year old.

Best of luck from up above (as opposed to down under) 🙂

I enjoyed my only visit to your country. I spent about 3 weeks on both islands. Wonderful scenery and great people.
