Changing the icon for a .webloc file on my desktop

I have a quick link on my desktop to a certain website. It is an icon with a .webloc extension. using "Get info" I open .webloc files with Safari. So if i click on the icon, safari opens and i go straight to my desired website.

The icon image for this quick link is the Safari compass. Is there any way to change this icon to a jpeg or other image of my choice?

yes, you can use any image as an icon for this file.
Open the image in Preview and enter command+c.
then then select the .weblock file and enter command+i. in the resulting popup select the small icon in the left upper corner and enter command+v .

well, it works for me. again, you open an image file in preview. enter command+a to select all (I think I forgot that part), then command+c to copy to the clipboard. then select the webloc file, enter command+i, select the little icon in the upper left corner of the popup and enter command+v to paste.

thanks, i've done this with a certain jpeg, but all it is doing is changing the image from the safari compass to the generic jpeg icon

in the "get info" window of the webloc file, each time i try to change the little icon in the top left corner, it does say modified ...

I suspect you didn't follow the instructions correctly. you need to *open the image file in Preview and copy it to the clipboard in Preview*. then it will work.
