Quicktime failed to initialize. Error # -2093

I know that people have posted this problem before, but nothing helped and I am rather desperate...

I recently bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 with Windows 7 Professional installed (32 bit). After I installed iTunes and QuickTime, former worked fine (except that I can't open iTunes store on it), latter would not even start and would just give me the "Quicktime failed to initialize. Error # -2093"

I have done some research online and on this website, the solutions I tried so far are
1. Completely uninstall QuickTime, download the newest version and install it again.
2. Copy the QTCF.dll file from QuickTime folder to Windows/System32 folder.
3. uninstall the 7.5 and install the 7.4 version

Nothing worked and I really have no idea how to solve this problem. Help!

thanks!

Tina

Isn't that great...I have just been talking to myself and could not get any help.

By the way, I did one more test with the system configuration (using the "msconfig" command)to disable all programs run in the background. QuickTime still does not start. There might be a conflict between windows operating system and QuickTime then?

Desperate...only hope is that Apple will be able to fix this problem with the next version.

Anyone home? Please lend a hand!

The last time I saw that cluster of symptoms, a Kaspersky firewall was blocking QuickTime from accessing the internet. What security software are you running on that PC?

Thank you so much for replying!!! finally...

I am using McAfee. And also, by using system config, I disabled all non Microsoft programs (including McAfee), but QuickTime still would not run.

So maybe QuickTime is not compatible with Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)?

Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks a lot!

I'm still suspecting security software interference of some sort, Tina. The odd feature of your 2093 is that your iTunes launches. (With a 2093 caused by a broken QuickTime, or a misplaced QTCF.dll down inb your system32, iTunes almost always doesn't launch.) That would also be consistent with your Store connection difficulties.

Even if you don't currently have it installed now, has a Symantec Security product like Norton *ever been* installed on the PC? (Bits and bobs of undead Norton componentry can lurk around on a PC even after the uninstall, causing some exotic issues with iTunes and Bonjour in particular, but sometimes also QuickTime.)

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes, my new computer came with Norton (trial version) installed, but once I installed McAfee, I uninstalled Norton.

I checked in Program files but did not find a Norton folder. Is there anyway I can find all the other components of Norton if that is the problem.

But by disabling all program running in the background using System config, shouldn't that have disable any Norton components to run?

Thanks again for the fast reply!

Okay ... just to be on the safe side I think it's worth running Symantec's Norton Removal Tool.

Warning in advance ... the Tool removes all Symantec software from a PC, so if you have non-security Symantec programs on the PC like WinFax, be sure to back up that data prior to application of the tool. Here's a link to the tool:

Not always. It's usually better to to configure the firewalls and other components using their internal controls. (They can sometimes even consider use of MSCONFIG as an attack ... I don't blame them for that, since some malware deliberately does try to shut down security software via similar measures.) But in the case of "undead Norton" issues (if that's what is afoot here) we don't have internal user controls ... we've uninstalled them.

Apologies for the delay, Tina. I've been thinking ("brooding" might be a better term) over what might be most sensible to check on next.

Can you do an experiment for me? Try going into the C:\Program files\QuickTime\ directory and doubleclicking on the sample movie in there.

Does QuickTime play the movie, or do you get the 2093 again?

I have been getting the same error in iTunes 9.0.2.25 and now I am getting it in iTunes 9.0.3.15. When I install iTunes, it starts and runs successfully, but when I try and run QT, I get the Error -2093. When I reboot my computer, neither QT not iTunes starts, so I have to uninstall all Apple programs, reboot my computer, then re-install iTunes. This cycle has been going on for over 4 months. I do have Windows 7 and did not have a problem with the version of iTunes prior to 9.0.2.25 (of course, I don't have the earlier versions of iTunes available to install).

Ta for the heads up about iTunes 9.0.3.15. It was the first time I'd heard of it.

With your version of the 2093, does it also say "The procedure entry point QTCF_CRUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link library QTCF.dll"?

Feb 2, 2010 2:43 PM in response to d2s2

No. It only displays the "Failed to Initialize" message. And now, iTunes will not start up after it is installed (version 9.0.3.15).

That's suggesting a common issue. But there's other possibilities that can simultaneously impact iTunes and QuickTime.

What is the iTunes launch error message?

Hi again, Tina. Let's hold off on the iTunes upgrade just at the moment.

let me doublecheck something ... what is your current installed QuickTime version?

If iTunes is working, the easiest way to check would be to launch iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics ...", *uncheck all four boxes* and click "Next".

(When I do that, my QuickTime version is listed as 7.6.5 .)
