I plugged in my time capsule today as my "main" router (removing my Airport Extreme router)..

After installing the new "Airport Utility" from the CD, setup The Time capsule, main router. 3 minutes later, all is connected to the internet and all is working well.

Holding down the "reset" button on my airport extreme and cycling the power reset to factory settings...

Bringing up Airport Extreme in the utility, I started a new config...selecting to "join" the existing wifi network and "extend" the time capsule.

Applying changes seemed to work...

Now Wifi routing through the Time Capsule doesn't work. I can use the Wifi from the Airport Extreme (very difficult to tell as they have the same name).... But, devices that I'm sure can't read the airport extreme cannot work..and they show connected to wifi with very powerful antenna's.

So far, extending has proved "not working"...it's time to call apple.

+Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that the tc doesnt work with the airport express?!+

If you did read this, the information was not correct. It's possible that you may have seen a post about using an older version of the AirPort Express, which did not have the "extend" functionality. In that case, it would be necessary to use a WDS type configuration, but the Express would still "extend" using WDS.

The AirPort Express(n) and Time Capsule work fine together.

Just be sure to make a change using AirPort Utility to "Allow this network to be extended" on the Wireless setup page. Then configure the AirPort Express(n) to "extend a wireless network"

The step by step instructions on how to do this were already posted in this thread.

Did you configure the Time Capsule to allow itself to be extended? It should be if you are going to use the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to wirelessly extend the Time Capsule.

If the AEBS is connected via Ethernet to the Time Capsule you would not configure the Time Capsule to extend a network.

Please describe how you are trying to connect the AEBS and Time Capsule.

Hi there,

Firstly thank for the time you are spending in assisting me.

As it is at the moment, I have my TC networked into my BT hub. I use the BT wifi for my PS3 and PC computers and the TC wifi for my Apple products.

I'd love to be able to gain access to my TC wifi from the garden (at the back of the house while my router and TC are at the front of the house) as I use my TC as a 1. wifi connection for my Apple products and 2. as an 'external' wireless hard drive - I have an Airbook and I take a lot of photos (what I should do is ditch the Airbook and buy a Macbook Pro, but I'm not quite there yet!)

Anyhow, so you think a Airport express will work? Excellent, I may pop out and buy one this weekend if I can find the time to do boy things on what should be a female-focused weekend! Girlfriends, eh...spoil all the fun!

Cheers,

D

+Anyhow, so you think a Airport express will work?+

It will work if you now have your TC setup to create a wireless network. The AirPort Express will "extend" that network. But, you'll need to position the Express in an area where it receives a good signal to "extend".

Take your laptop to the area where the proposed location of the Express will be. Normally, the Express would be positioned about 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between the TC and the area that you want to cover. Make sure that you can get a good wireless signal where the Express will be located. Otherwise, it will not function correctly.

Thats fantastic. Yup, I can get wireless at the back of the house (inside) but as soon as I step outside, it goes! So, that should work perfectly!

THANK YOU!

Now then, now that thats all sorted... I will buy the airport express this weekend and have a go at setting it all up. Leading on from that after reading up a bit more on the airport express - will it stream music from my AppleTV or does it only work from iTunes on a laptop? Just thinking I can now (possibly) plug a set of speakers into the airport express analogue port and put the speakers outside during the summer. At the moment, I use a docking station with my iPod, but there are limitations therein... Well, you get my jist!

Last question, promise! Well, until I think of something else I want to do!

Bob,
Good evening I have seen your posts and your knowledge and help our fabulous!! I had a question about this thread and that is, I recently switched from the old AEB (the Mushroom)w/an old AE to a TC and 802.11.n AE. The performance hit was the reverse, my wireless is now spotty when before it was spot on. An example is my iPhone used to be able to pick up my old network (the mushroom) all over my house and that is not the case.
I am thinking of doing WDS as opposed to WPA2, I have read that my range will be increased by going the WDS route.
Has anyone experienced the drop in performance from the old AEB to the new?
