Freezing after sleep

Hey Folks

My 3 week old MBP running the latest versions of Snow keeps freezing. I shut the lid, put it away and when I open it again, it's stuck where I left it. Clock has stopped, no response. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button to force it off then restart.

Anyone else having this issue? Any solution?

G'day Timothy,

Probably the most common causes of this problem are background processes that don't know how to "let go" ( virus checkers , drive checkers and the like) and external devices (usually USB - hubs, drives, you name it but sometimes FW or even networked devices connected over ethernet, bluetooth or wireless) that have badly written drivers or firmware that don't deal properly with sleep or power events.

Working out what is causing it generally involves a process of elimination. Start with a clean system with no peripherals attached, and then add devices and/or software one by one (whether they be software or hardware)until the problem recurs..

You should also check that everything you are running when the problem occurs uses the latest SL compatible software and firmware updates.

Cheers

Rod

Thanks Rod

I'll have to pay attention, but I know this happens with my other computers/drives on as well as with them off.

IE: All of my networked devices, bluetooth and other things (iphones) can be OFF and this still happens.

Is there some way to check for things like 'virus checkers'? I don't have any 3rd party stuff installed - So is it the Apple software that's poorly written?

Cheers

Try using Console utility to view system.log to see what is happening at the time you close the lid. What should happen is that there should be a System Sleep message and then there shouldn't be any more messages until System Wake. I wonder if, instead of sleeping, some process is generating errors or simply not stopping. If such a process generates log entries, you may see its name there.

You also might try running the Apple hardware test on one of the discs that came with your Mac, to see if you have any bad RAM or hardware defects, since sleep should be very, very stable as it is with most Mac users. You definitely should not accept this behavior.

Hi 23

Here's a log for today - As it happened just an hour ago. The MBP wasn't used much today, just opened to check email and then closed. Next time it was opened, it was frozen... Again. :-\

Ah, that MagicMenu! There is another beast of the same name that plays around with the visibility of the Menu bar and hasn't been updated for some time.

If it is a current version of Stuffit it should be ok , but there have been some changes in SL in the manner in which contextual menus and the like operate. I see that SmithMicro fully endorse Stuffit Deluxe 2010, and equivocally endorse Stuffit Deluxe 2009, but make no mention of the suitability of earlier versions. I'm afraid I'm still on Stuffit 12 myself , but I don't have the MagicMenu installed to test it at present.

Do you use any scheduled tasks with Stuffit? Things like scheduled task operation can quite often be involved with sleep issues. THose "com.apple.launchd.peruser" lines are all about scheduled tasks.

I see, as Network 23 points out, that one of the final tasks actually involved checking for updates of the keyboard re-mapper software.

Just to be clear, did you stop using the computer at about noon or at about 2.07 PM? I've been assuming the latter, but if it was the former then the problems are occurring at the time of waking (either because you tried to wake it, or because something automatic tried to), rather than the time of sleeping.

Cheers

Rod

Hi Guys

Well - 2 days and no freezes! Thanks for all the input and pointing me in the right direction.

I wish I could say it was magicmenu, or anything in specific, but Rod's suggestion led me to look in my startup items. I found a few things (that I meant to write down but didn't) that I don't use any more - Leftover from pre-SL days - and I removed them. yes, magicmenu was one of them, but not the sole item removed.

So I seem to be fixed up.
A appreciate all the input and your time. I'm going to leave this question open for a while in case it happens again.

Thanks again!

Feb 3, 2010 5:45 PM in response to Timothy B Hewitt

KeyRemap4MacBook still looks like a prime suspect, Timothy, though the logs are perhaps from a time after the crash from what you say. (mmm, on second thoughts, I don't think they are. The displayed time simply hasn't updated on screen and the crash has prevented it doing so when you have tried to wake it)

Are you running the latest SL version of it, released a week or so back? - see http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/

If so, it may be a good idea to contact the developer of it.

I see that at least one earlier version used to cause kernel panics after hibernation - see http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/changelog.html

Unfortunately un-installing it can apparently be a bit tricky, too, with some versions.

If you really don't want to uninstall it, then you might try turning off its preference for checking for updates. This seems to be when the trouble happens.

Be interesting to see what happens at first wake-up after 2.07 tomorrow!

Cheers

Rod

Thanks Guys

NW23 - I will do that next time it happens, thanks for the instructions.

Rod - Yes, I am running the latest version of KeyRemap. With this new MBP, they took away my 'enter key' to the right of the space/apple key (Speaking of, where's the apple, Apple? I miss it).

I've disabled checking for updates, which is actualy 'Check for updates on startup'.

Is there another way to remap that option key to enter? If so, I can dump KeyRemap (and might have to anyway).

Lets see what happens today.
