iPhone 3GS and original Bose Sounddock

I have an iPod classic that I use with the original (not portable or series II) Bose Sounddock. I just ordered an iPhone 3GS (haven't received it yet) and I'm wondering whether I can play music that's on it through the Sounddock. I understand that the original Sounddock won't charge an iPhone, I'm just curious about whether it will play music. I read some scary stories online about how using the iPhone 3GS with the original sounddock will ruin the phone. Any truth to this?

I've had no issues with my iPhone 3G or 3GS with the original sounddock except for the whole charging thing. You will get the "this accessory is not made for the iPhone" message and you may get the "do you want to go into airplane mode?" question too. The popups are a bit anoying but the general function of the sounddock still works.

You can also buy charging adaptors for the sounddock too so it will charge newer iPod & iPhone devices.

Hmm, this is weird. I just bought the original sounddock, pretty sure its not series II, and its certainly not portable. I have had zero trouble using my iPhone 3gs on it. Not even got the message Dr.Al is talking about.
On the box, which i still have 🙂 it says that the sounddock supports iPhone.

But anyways, zero trouble. 🙂

Thanks to you both for your responses. I called Bose and they offered to trade in my original Sounddock for the new portable Sounddock which uses USB instead of firewire charging, so it's able to charge the iPhone 3GS. It would cost me $179 for the trade. They also have the option of changing the charge cradle on the original Sounddock to USB for $99. I love the Sounddock and like the idea of a portable Sounddock that can run on battery power. A new portable would cost $400, so I'm probably going to go with the trade-in option.

I have the original Bose sounddock and it will not charge the Iphone 3GS, however I phoned Bose and they told me that for £65 i could have it adjusted and it will accept all the Apple products.

They collected it by carried and 1 week later it is back and working great. I use my sounddock 24/7 and missed the fact that it would not charge whilst playing so the £65 was well worth it to me.
