How do you register?

I went to the "Account setup" screen, selected "mac.com account" then clicked on the "get an iChat account". I filled in the form and crated my account. I can go to myinfo.apple.com and log in with my mac.com address/pw.

But when I type in that account into the "account setup" tab, it always tells me "incorrect mobileMe password", even though I'm selecting "mac.com account" not "mobile me account".

Is there no way to use iChat without paying $100 a year for mobileMe?

Hi,

Did you set up a password with more than 16 characters ?
Apple lets you create longer passwords (Or did before the @Mac names got changed to iChat Names only and MobileMe passwords can be longer)

The AIM Servers however cannot cope with passwords over 16 characters.

Other than this what you describe seems to be OK.

Ralph, this might be vaguely related, but maybe not....I just signed up for an iChat account for its ability to allow easy screen sharing, using my mobileme login. All seemed fine until I realized that my business partner's name is showing up as 'me-available' at the top of the AIM buddy window instead of myself. I am totally mystified. (Also peripherally related: now when I try to set my iCal for alarms delivered to my email, his name and email address show up along with our generic office email address (that we all receive) and not my personal address. ⚠ Any insight about this dilemma that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

As Defcom says the Mac User Logged in on the Mac should be the same person as the Head and Shoulders card (My Card) in the Address Book.

Options are to Change the Address Book entry if you are the only one using the Mac.
Create your Own Mac User account on that Mac.
Change the Display to your Handle and forget about it.

On the Last.
If your Colleague takes copy of the Address Book to another computer the Cards will have the info about your Buddies Screen Names (At least that have Real Names connected to iChat) even if he does not have access to your Buddy List.

If you move computers (or even User's Account) then wipe the Address Book and the Keychain of info relevant to you.
