Security Update 2010-001: MBP rendered virtually Useless

As requested on another thread, I am starting a new thread to explain the problems I am currently having with my 17" MBP after installing the Security Update 2010-001.

I installed the security update this morning, and rebooted the machine.

Startup was extremely slow. in the region of about 5-10 minutes with a consistent beachball untill startup has completed.

After startup, I could not launch any non-apple product so far. That includes:

Skype
Firefox
CaptureONE Pro
Photoshop CS3 or CS4
Microsoft office suite (word, excel, etc)

Some application would open, and then as soon as I try and open a file, it would crash (microsoft and Adobe Products) some would just bounce in the dock (skype, firefox) and some would start to open and then crash after the ID screen has been up for a few seconds.

My Wacom Tablet is not recognised and crashes (through USB) although my itunes and Ipod Touch seems to work fine (so it's not the USB drivers, per se)

I have not had any problems with this computer since my upgrade to snow leopard (10.6) and have had no indication that there are any system issues.

Incidently, I did a Disk Utility, Disk Verify and Permissions verify about a week ago to show somebody else and picked up no errors. After the security update, I did the verification of the disk and permissions again, and now it picks up errors.

The permission errors were fixed (all relating to flashplayer?) but I could not get the disk repair to do anything. I just received a note saying that the disk needs to be repaired by booting up with a startup disk... which I don't have (can one be made by another mac? can I download a startup image?)

I have searched for information about this update, and have found not a few issues, but nobody has an answer.

I also cannot quite see why a HD failure would allow the system to run, but only certain apps not to run. Logic (well, my logic) says that a re-install should clear any damaged files for that specific app?

I also just got a notice that my crash reporter has crashed 😀 - ironic

Boot from your OSX installation disk and run Disk Utility to repair permissions on the hard drive. It is actually a good idea to do this both before and after an update.

It actually looks like your advice worked!

and in the process, I think we might have stumbled upon a, if not a fix, at least a workable solution (well for us, anyway)

Both machine seems to be up and running again. This is how we got the second machine going again:

1. Repair Permissions on machine with Disk Utility
2. Startup computer in Target Disk Mode (hold T during Startup) and connect via firewire to another mac
3. Repair and verify disk of broken mac with second mac
4. Reboot
5. Boot into Safe Mode
6. Shut down completely
7. Start-up and pray to deity of choice...

I did the safe-mode thing with the second mac, and it didn't work until we also die the target-disk firewire repair. If I had another mac I'd try for a confirmation of the "fix"

Do be aware, that although I can now actually do some work in my RAW converter and Photoshop, the problem has not completely gone away. When I quite the application, I get a crash report.

Skype is working again, and Firefox is working again. It still looks like I would need to rebuild the computer from scratch at some point. at least I can get some work done though!

I have two MBP's running 10.5.8 I see this:
After booting from install DVD and repairing disk, and after restarting back from Mac, the errors restarted after a time. This has happend on TWO different MBP's running 10.5.8 (Early 2008 versions). Both of these issues arose AFTER the Security Update 2010-001. The chances are pretty huge that the same issue creap up on two separate computers... Here is the log again. NOTE: The issue happens one out of 4 verifies in (not permissions verify) Disk Utility.
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

If you haven't already done so, I suggest you download and install SMARTReporter:

http://www.corecode.at/smartreporter/

This very useful bit of freeware checks the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drive in the background hourly. The S.M.A.R.T. test determines if your drive is starting to show signs of an incipient hardware failure.

SMARTReporter puts a green icon in your menubar which turns to red if the S.M.A.R.T test fails. It can also be set to e-mail you a warning.

This is an absolutely indispensible tool that should be on every Mac.

I have been unable to boot my mac since installing this security update- all I could get to is the grey apple icon. I had a trial for netbarrier X5 on my mac but this has long expired, however the small castle icon still plagues the top of my screen. I wonder whether this has had anything to do with it?

I had to restore my entire system to a TM backup prior to the update to gain access and perform a normal boot. I am now very unwilling to install this update. Any advice more than welcome.

I have the same issue after installing the security update, or at least similar. Perhaps I have not been patient enough (10 min.) but the machine has not started up yet. It goes to the screen with the Apple logo and the symbol below keeps rolling. After a while the fan goes to "levitate this imac mode" and after a while spins down to normal, but does not go beyond that.

I'm now trying the installation from my original OSX Install Discs. ---- A nice:

"There were errors installing the software - Please try installing again - Restart"

It would be nice to have Apple publish a "how-to" when problems of this nature come up, and I don't mean some instructions in the knowledge database. A friendly little pop-up with specifics while doing the update procedure would seem in order.

I get that everyone should have their machines backed up, but some of the items described here are just too much to be able to follow through on for the majority of computer users.

More later...I hope!

I had a similar problem to the first poster in this thread. I reinstalled the security update and that fixed most of my problems. I am having a problem backing up to a new time machine volume and I am getting the spinning beach ball a lot. When running permissions I get error messages about unexpected ACL.

I am fairly new to Mac's and yet I would not change back to windows if my life were in danger.
I have a similar issue with what is being reported here. When I have gone to use SKYPE or Yahoo Messenger, or some online chat forums that support video conferencing I keep getting the message no cam found or configure device.
I also get firefox suddenly quiting for no reason, omniweb browser, and opera browser, and icab browsers all do the same thing. Even in Safari I get the error messages.
It is frustrating to say the least since it is the primary way my wife and I have of seeing our Grand Children who are scattered about the country. I realize this is not a critical situation but to us it is a major inconvenience.
I even called Apple Care Support and they had no answer for me either.
I have also noticed that some of my photo editing software, Adobe Elements and Pixelmator are also acting up.
I would appreciate any reasonable suggestions.

I have the same problems as Forgiss on my SL 10.6.2 (MacBook) after installing the security update.

Almost all applications crash now right after their startup, like Firefox, Photoshop, iTunes, iWeb, iPhoto, Parallels and on and on and on.

Only some like Finder, Disk Utility, Settings, Mail and iCal are working.

Safari crashes on the "normal" user account where some add-ins are installed like Adblocker. The "clean" Safari on the admin account does actually startup just fine.

Repairing the permissions didn't show any effects on the problem.

Forgiss, are your problems really gone, and what have you done besides repairing permissions?

Feb 12, 2010 8:24 AM in response to Forgiss

No, I wish I could report that my problems are "gone"

All the apps and software does launch and work now, but I get regular crashes, so it seems that whatever was happening in the background was brought to light in a more serious fashion by the security update.

I don't think it's HD failure, but I do think there are software clashes and plugins, etc that is causing the havoc.

I also realised that some people that claim no issues or crashes, have their crash reports set to "never bother me with this stuff" ;D

It's curious, when I start Mac OS X in "Safe Mode" I can use almost all applications. I have read that this update did something with Core Audio. I think in safe mode Mac OS X starts without giving access to audio and other hardware related stuff. It may be that herein lies the solution for our problems. Although - I have no idea what I could actually do about it.
