Many issues have been related to Adobe's media software, causing more headaches than many users feel it's worth. With YouTube and Vimeo offering the HTML5 version for viewing its videos, users can now browse without having to use Flash (videos now play using the H.264 encoding).

And that is the whole point: the iPad pre-empts the transition from Flash to HTML5.

Flash is doomed. It is only a question of how long it will take to kill it off.

What about Windows Videos? And while we're at it, RealVideo.

As for the iPad, it fits my needs. Big screen, potability and now I don't have to drag around a desktop (Don't have a laptop. And the iPad is cheaper.) to play Keynotes.

Flash is an Adobe product. Steve Jobs has absolutely nothing to do with it.

If you are unhappy with Adobe's support for the new iPad, please re-direct your concerns to them.

And if it had Flash, you'd be whining about the very short battery charge life.

After watching Steve Jobs' address about the IPad and reading most of what has been put forward in this forum and others I have come to a couple of conclusions.
1: Apple has every right to not support Flash as it is flaky in the extreme.
When ever I surf a web site with flash I swivel my chair around and look at it on the PC. Just to save the aggro.
2: JDee gave a link to an article by John Gruber that was most informative.
Everyone should read this and learn what you can from other places so as to have an informed opinion.
3: Apple can not just ignore the camera issue but has anyone considered that the IPod and the IPhone are works in progress and the IPad will be. No company in it's right mind would give you everything in one device from the get go.
4: After the address the first thing I did was look at Apples web site to see the IPad there. No IBook for Australia. No idea of when it will start. But discouraged I am not because it has to come here sooner rather than later. Again same with the camera. I hope I can get books that are out of print but I won't hold my breath.
5: I own an IMac G4 and a MacBook. I do not need an IPhone or an IPad right now but if I wait till I need one instead of when want one, I might actually get what I need. How many people have bought an IPhone and will buy an IPad simply to keep up with the Jones'? Sheep.

Don't waste your money on something you don't need and stop wasting our time about Flash. It will die a slow and horrible death but die it will.

Of course, you don't have to buy one if you don't like it, so you are in control. If you already have an iPhone or an iPod touch, you already know what the iPad surfing experience will be, except that I would expect it to be easier on the eyes with the much larger display.

I do agree, however, that no flash is a problem, considering that most video websites currently online use it, including Hulu.

I can live without the camera and multitasking, but I will not buy one without flash support. It will be several years before the majority of the video content on the web is not viewed with flash. I suspect the first gen of the iPad will be obsolete before flash is made obsolete....

The good news for the people who hate flash content and still want the iPad is that there should be a steady supply of them on the refurb site at lower cost due to many irate people returning them because it DID NOT give them the best internet viewing experience ever. Keep in mind that the main target of this device are people who may not know it does not support Flash ( the casual computer user )

Not sure how you or anyone else knows for certain what Apple's "main" target for the iPad is besides the powers that be at Apple. During the iPad's announcement, it was specifically mentioned there are already XX million iPhone and iPod Touch owners/users who will already know how to use it along with what it will be capable of and not capable of, so a good portion of what Apple considers the "main" target for the iPad must include existing iPhone and iPod Touch owners.

I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, so I have no interest in an iPad. If I was an avid book reader, I would probably consider one for that alone.

Time will tell with the iPad and I don't believe anyone knows for certain how the iPad will fare. There were many so called "experts" who predicted the iPhone would be nothing but a flash in the pan and would be forgotten within a year or two.

I don't think that is the main target audience. I can see the iPad as an excellent device for the professional who has to do presentations, the salesman showing a client data on a product, tech support people who want a lightweight device, etc. It's also a good device for the person who doesn't want all the headaches of a full blown computer because their only uses are paying bills or answering email.

I'm far from a casual computer user and I have no need of flash. I get tired of it hogging all my system resources or locking my browser because some component gets stuck.
