    Hi,

Sorry the Strike-through should have been limited to the bits at the top.

Ok, Airport Admin Utility is the one you want.
They are combined on Leopard and Snow Leopard into one thing that can both Edit (What you want to do) and Set up a new network.

So If I remember correctly you get the little pop up window list an Airport Base Station and asks fro you to confirm it's IP address ?
Is it at this point it asks for a Password ?

(I don't have an Airport and I am trying to remember things people have told me and posted about this)

Yes, it lists the Base Station with IP 10.0.1.1. The choices above that are Other, Rescan, Configure, and Multiple. When I click on Configure, it asks for the password. I have it recorded but it's not working, I even confirmed it in the Keychain. Wait - I just thought of something - when I was at my sister's house trying to set this up, obviously I had to get on her network. I wonder if it wants her password?

    Hi,

The access from your Computer even if you moved both to a new network should not have changed unless you used the Set Up Utility and changed it that way.

You may have course used you sister's computer to reconfigure it and then it is likely it will have that password.

I called her and she reminded me that she doesn't have a master password for her system, and now I remember that we just bypassed that by hitting enter. So I tried that when it asks for it but it didn't work. I think I probably did use her Airport Admin Utility because when I first plugged my Airport in at her house it wouldn't work.

Anyway, I know it's late where you are - feel free to ignore me now until you have time again! I'm assuming we're stuck at this point until I figure out this password anyway. I will work on that.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Yes we (you) are stuck until you remember the password.

I must admit to not knowing if using the Set Up Utility again wipes the settings that were made such as setting a password.

Oddly the PortForward.com site lists an Extreme and shows pics from around Tiger (10.3.x) with the older style Utility.

It does not mention entering a password despite the pics that show a Change Password Button.

Thank you - I didn't have any time today to work on this, but I will get back here ASAP, hopefully having figured out this password issue before we both forget all the details of what we've done!

Yay for me - I'm in! I did a hard reset on the AirPort and the Admin Utility is up. I'll await your instructions whenever you have the time.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Can you confirm what you see in front of you when the Airport Utility is open ?

DO you get a small window first asking for a IP address of you get a larger window with a list (possibly only one listed) of the airport Base Stations in range ?

This is the later firmware Internet Pane pic

The small window then set up pages I don't have pictures of.

If it is the older style I will have to rack my brian somewhat to remember the next step.
If you have some on line web space or use one of the pic hosting sites, pics would help.

Hi Ralph! Here's what I see. First the top window and when I click on Configure, the bottom one.

And here's what the AirPort and Network tabs show:

    Right, Old Stlyle.

In the Network Page disable the "Distribute IP Addresses"
This is because the Modems is already routing and you want the Base Station to become just a WiFi Extension of that (A Wirelss Access Point).

You should use the Apply Button.
After that you Mac should get an IP from the Modem in the Range 192.168.x.x range.

Okay, done. Do I check the IP at ip-adress.com again? This is what it shows. 97.83.147.78
  • Ralph Johns (UK) Level 9 Level 9 (69,575 points)
    Hi,

A test at that site will show the IP that gets from the ISP to the Modem.
The Modem then changes the data to the LAN IPs (Shown in the Internet Pane of the Airport).

The Airport was then changing the IPs again to 10.0.1.x range for the Computers not on the Modem.

Looking in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab will show you the IP the computer gets now. (It should be 192.168 something.something)

I have to leave for a bit, but I'll be back. Am I ready to test iChat again with my sister?

Remind whether you have set ports for iChat in the SMC devices seeing you could not find UPnP ?

I think you are as the log was almost connected from the time before.
