software update error (-1001)

Everytime I try to update my software through "Software Update" I get an error code (-1001) saying thata a networking error has occured, timed out(-1001) Please make sure you can connect to the internet... I am connected to the internet so that is not the problem but I really don't know what to do and I'm not enough of a Mac expert to be able to find the answer myself. It seems I've seen other posts related to this issue but I can't seem to find them now. Can any one explain in simple terms, what the problem is? and how I fix it?

iMac 24inch (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.8), previously owned, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Hi. I experienced the same problem some time ago. It happened to me when I tried to update several computers at the same time. It looked like the network I was on couldn't handle the traffic. Once a couple of the computers finished updating, the ones that errored out could then also be updated. I found the best time to do a software update is in the morning. Things always seem to be slower in the afternoon.

Since it appears you've had this issue for awhile, and posted about it elsewhere.
One of the possible answers was in a thread, ahead of your post there. Did it work?

The path to the .plist file mentioned in that thread is more defined in this reference:

+_delete the file_+:
/YourHardDrive> Users> YourUserName> Library/Preferences> com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

You could also get and use a disk interface utility, such as OnyX from Titanium Software
& use one of the appropriate selections within it, to clear the Software Update log/cache.

Also routine and basic preventative maintenance in the Mac OS X is recommended, in
some instances required to have little or no issues later on. Even a startup in SafeBoot,
run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions', quit D.U. and restart normally, can help some.

And when Software Update itself seems to balk, you can go to Apple Support downloads
and get the update files to download directly to the desktop in the browser. And, if you
have issues with a browser, be sure to get the latest version of whatever ones you use
directly from the site. Some browsers offer an upgrade/download link within them. It is
handy to have more than one good browser in the computer; I have four last versions.
Safari, Firefox, Camino, Opera... and there are others. Some work in sites where others
don't seem to. And with web page specifications changing, along with security matters,
being on top of these has relevance beyond just browsing for trivial content, as some do.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
