WORKING WITH 3 SECTIONS & PAGE NUMBERS IN DOCUMENT

I am 91 years old & have never worked so hard at anything in my life! Every time I get the
Section Breaks worked out, the numbering goes kaput. The approx. 75-page document starts with a sheet that has only a large "I" in the center of the page. Since I don't want this page to have a n number, I start with page 2, which will be the first page of the first Section. So I have designated that first mostly empty page by marking it with a Section break at the bottom of the page. OK?

Page 26 is the beginning of Section "II" so I marked it wih a section Break, then proceeded to change the page numbers in the footnotes, expecting the first page of that section to be page 27. WRONG!
Brilliant Pages changed P.2 of Section I, to p.27 and the numbers escalated like the bankers getting the Government handout! Incidentally, I'm working with Thumbnails. I went back & called p. 2, p.2 and now everything is p.2! I opened Layout, Sections and it was dimmed out--strictly out of business.

TTo sum it up, I have 3 sections, but no page numbers I can use. Somebody please HELP ME.
I I have finished with my manuscript for some time, but Sections & numbers have had me sstymied. Why can't Mac KISS? Thanks for getting me going.

P.S. I have two unwanted Text Boxes now on the unnumbered p. 1.?

Open the Inspector palette in the Layout tab > Sections. Here you can tell Pages how the inserted page numbers ( Insert > Page number) should be handled. Remember to have clicked the insertion point in the section you want to affect.

You need to tell Pages that the first page is different from the others. Then in the second section you tell Pages to start numbering from # 1. Maybe you have to tell the next section to Continue page numbering from the previous section.

Dear fruhulda,

Your solution seems okay, BUT I am still stuck with numbering. Somehow I must have
deleted Continuous Numbering because I am still stuck on p. 2. I have gone to Pages Index
& cannot find exactly a description of continuous numbering, and Changing Numbering
Footnotes do not work for me! If you can help with this, perhaps the rest of your instructions
will work. Thanks

Hm, I think I will have some problems describing what to do but start by deleting any numbers in the footers.
Click on the first page > Layout tab > Selection button > First page is different
Click in the second section > Inspector as before > Start at: 1
Inser menu > Page number
Click in the third section > Inspector palette again > select Continue from previous section

If you can't manage send the document to me. Click on my name to get my mail address.

Dear fruhulda,
Trying to work on your last suggestions, I hit a bump and am so discouraged, & can't send the manuscript to you now because of the following upset:

THE SECTION BREAKS STILL PREVAIL ON EACH SECTION, BUT SECTION I IS NOW SECTION II
SECTION II IS NOW SECTION I, BUT III IS OK as is.
AND THERE IS NO PAGE NUMBERING!
I do not know how to fix this.

IN NUMBERING THIS BOOK OF POEMS, each Section page is is Different--not numbered actually--but treated in the sequence, so that the following page in each Section is numbered as though the first page were numbered. For example:
Page 1 is not numbered, but the next page is p.2etc.

I am really concerned at what's happened to my manuscript, which I've worked so hard on. So what can you do about it now? I'm appreciative of your help and thank you, but I'm getting worried.

I sent the manuscript to fruhulda via e-mail & back & forth she solved the Sections problem. The larger problem was getting the numbering right. There were three section pages marked "different" (i.e.I, II,& III, which counted for a number in consecutive order, but the number could not appear on those pages. All of the page numbers ran consect.utively, just by-passing those three Section Heading pages, as noted above. Hope I have made this clear.

I am deeply grateful to fruhulda for all the time & trouble she took to get this problem worked out. She did solve both problems. I am als
