Cannot save mail to download folder

When I try to save anything (pictures, movie clips, pps, any attachment) mail says in a pull down window, "Mail was unable to save the attachment...Please verify that the download folder is exists and is writable."

The download folder does exist. How do I make it writable?

I did not have this problem before, I have saved to this folder in the past.

I can drag attachments to the desktop or other folder to save them.

I have not described this problem correctly. I can save any attachment to the download folder. By selecting SAVE or right clicking.

I CANNOT open powerpoint presentations. If I double click on the icon I get the message "Mail was unable to save the attachment...Please verify that the download folder exists and is writable."

movie clips appear and play in the mail window but if I select quick view the same message appears

I know you say that the folder exist and that you have saved there before but, did you verify the folder in which it is being saved, by looking in Mail preferences. then making sure that that folder exist.

I suggest the following:

1. Creating a temp folder on the desktop called "temp mail".

2. Open Mail the go to Mail/Preferences/General Tab, then mid-way down the option to change the Downloads folder in which mail saves downloaded attachments. change this to the newly created "temp mail" folder located on your desktop.

3. Close preferences, quit mail, restart mail then try saving an attachment. If this works then try changing the the download location back to your original downloads folder that was set in mail previously.

Update: I'll keep this post here so that it might help someone.

Since you changed your mind on what the problem was, LOL... well that changes everything.
