What will convert my DVD's to MPEG-2?

I have a Mac OS 10.4.11 and have MPEG2 Works 4, Streamclip, and iSkysoft, and none of them will convert my longer (2 hour) DVD's properly. Is there some other software that I can get that is free or won't cost too much? Does Quicktime or Mac software have anything for this yet? danpeanuts (at) hotmail (dot) com

If these are commercial DVDs we can't provide an answer here because in the US it is illegal to convert commercial DVDs and that goes against [Terms of Use of this site|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa].

If they are not commercial but your homemade DVDs then you need to buy the mpeg-2 Quicktime extension from Apple to enable working with mpeg-2 content on a Mac. This won't work on commercial DVDs, by the way.

These DVD's that I need to convert are made by a church and I think all of them were done on a Windows machine. They play fine on my DVD player, but when I try to convert them to MPEG2 the MPEG2Works4 and the Streamclip freeze up after about 1 hour, and the iSkysoft converts it but with glitches every 20 seconds or so. I need something that will convert from DVD to MPEG2 that is solid and that works good. Do you think the Quicktime will do it? I have heard that it only plays, but won't convert to MPEG2.

Thanks,

Dan

What format are your DVDs in if not mpeg2?

They probably are multiple .vob files which could have mpeg-2 video muxed with mpeg-2 audio or ac3. I think the OP wants these as a single muxed file.

I would give MPEGStreamclip or the other software a try again, but this time first copy all the files on the DVD to a folder on your computer and then work with them.

Is there lots of free space on this computer? Is the drive Mac formatted? You could end up with a file that's nearly 8 GB in size if the DVD is dual layer.
