Hello,
I'm posting to ask if it looks like the iPad will (through some configuration) 'allow' us to install other operating systems. As it stands my main OS is ubuntu and I';ve given it 8GB on my computer and it's doing fine. Also, it supports multi-touch, so I think it would be cool to have a little portable computer. Just wondering how well it would work. Thanks for your comments and speculations,

end

iPad, Other OS, Ubuntu 9.10/OSX 10.6.2

Perhaps you could wait until the ipad is actually released. Certainly we will know then.

The iPad has been released as of Jan 27, 2010

The iPad will require iTunes for many operations (sofware upgrades, content synching, etc), and iTunes is only supported on Mac OS X and Windows (XP, Vista and Windows 7).

    NO. It has not.

This is not about using their software, surely I can leave it on there (or put it on there) for firmware updates. I'm asking if it will be easy to put an operating system with low system requirements on it so I can use it as another computer. Again, thanks for your comments,

Yes, that's when you can get an iPad, here: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/01/27ipad.html is when it was released (the 27th)

    end

EDIT: release date vs ship date

Released means that you can get one. It indeed has NOT been released.

    It has been announced.

It will not be released for about two months.

When it is released, then we will know more about it.

My guess is that it will just as easy as it is to do that on an iPod Touch -- it is basically the same OS and same closed system, not some kind of OS X netbook.

If by that you mean that you want to install some other operating system on the iPad, then no, that will not be easy by any means. I won't say it will be impossible - people have managed to hack the iPhone and install Linux so it probably won't be out of the question that someone could do it with the iPad - but it won't be supported by Apple and will not be a straightforward task.
