Resizing and viewing in full screen

New to the Mac so still working through its quirks and can't for the life of me work out how to view applications, e.g. Safari and Word, in full screen. They open as smaller windows and want to resize, but don't now how! Assistance gratefully received...

Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Actually as the previous posted mentioned you don't have to "get used to it." He is correct this is the default way OS X works however I prefer the old MS Window way. I have to admit this is probably the only thing I missed about MS Windows though. The solution is a free application called RightZoom. You can download it and add it to your startup menu and off you go. The link to it is here.
