Universal dock doesn't output video?

I've been trying to output video from the iPod to my TV using the universal dock, but I can't get any video. I do get audio, though. I'm using an s-video to RCA adapter and a minijack to RCA adapter for the audio, then the RCA cables go into the front ports on my TV. I know that all of the cables and adapters work becasue they work on my friends powerbook and I know the TV ports work becasue my PS2 is usually plugged into them.

I have the iPod set up to ask if I want it to output to TV. The TV out will work with the iPod AV cable (the one that plugs into the mini jack on the top), but I want it to work with the dock.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or do you think I got a defective dock?

I too am having the same problem! I want to connect to my TV via the svideo as they are the cables I have! I phoned apple care and was told to try the other cables in my ipod to make sure it wasnt a fault with the ipod!!! The dock works well for syncing with my powerbook and for connecting audio out - just not the s-video out!!! and I have made sure the cable works with other svideo things- no problem at all!

I don't have an iPod, but I have to ask...

Are you switching the "input" on your TV Set to make the front connections the active connections? On our TVs we have to change the inputs like canging channels so the TV knows you are hooked up to the front or back jacks. Additionally, we need to have one of our TVs set to an "Aux" setting to accept signals from other than the coax input for the antenna/cable wire.

This is also true of our DVD and VT players. If we connect a video camera to the front inputs, we have to make sure those inputs are active.

I haven't done a great job of explaining this. Grab your TV or DVD or VCR instruction book and read about "signal inputs" or "auxilliary inputs" or something similar.

I'm having the same problem as described, but I'm using the Monster cables from the Apple web site. These were made to be used for this, so the cabling set up shouldn't be the issue.
TV show is on the iPod;
iPod is in the dock;
Dock connected to front of TV with monster cables;
We hear the audio but no video goes to the TV. Video is showing on the iPod.

Is the sVideo connection for the video, ansd the RCA's for the audio?

I have a similar config:

iPod Video 30 GB,
Universal Dock,
S-Video to RCA cable (which came with my Powerbook)

I plug the Dock to my RCA TV using the S-Video to RCA, turn on the 'TV Out' on the iPod, but there is no video on my TV.

I'm wondering if the dock is only good for S-Video connections and not RCA.

I know that the cables and TV work, because my powerbook works fine using the same config.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

You can NOT use the iBook A/V cable, even Apple's website says so...
You need the iPod specific A/V cable. I learned this AFTER buying an iBook A/V cable by mistake. I use both an S-Video cable or my newly purchased iPod A/V cable connected to my universal dock. As long as I have TV out enabled I get beautiful results with NO problems.
Buy the right cable and you should too.

I'm not using the A/V cable, I'm using my Powerbook's S-Video to RCA cable, connected directly to the dock and the other end to the TV.

Thanks again.

Just hope the notes below will give you some answers:

- iPod photo dock (without IR receiver) can be used to output video (by iPod 5G) through 7pins s/Video connector ONLY. The 3.5mm jack can be used to output audio signals ONLY.

So if you need video-out, have to use a s/video cable

- iPod universal dock (with IR receiver) can be used to output video (by iPod 5G) through the 7pins s/video, then can be used to output both audio&video through the 3.5mm jack using proper A/V cable adapter

If you have spare A/V cables around you will find these links useful:

I have the iPod universal dock (with IR receiver) and a S-Video to RCA cable (which came with my Powerbook G4) connected to my RCA TV. And it doesn't work.

Recently I bought the Universal iPod Dock and just tried the S-Video out on it and it works. All what I did was used an S-Video Cable connected to my DVD Recorder/Player (Line Input 3) and the audio from the Line Out to my DVD Recorder/Player (same as S-Video Input Line Input 3). The Line-Out on the Dock is just like the Headphone/Line-Out on the iPod itself. The S-Video just provides a better picture quality then using the composite RCA Video.

Looks like you all need to just use an S-Video Cable if your TV has a front S-Video input.

Did you look in the manual that came with the Universal iPod Dock?
