The best DVD to Apple TV converter?

This is a question that's probably been asked a thousand times on this forum, but here it goes again. What is THE BEST software for converting DVDs (and other files) to mp4 Apple TV compatible files? I have been using Handbrake, but the encodes seem darker than the source DVD files, and there is no settings to change the brightness or anything else. I have been searching the web, and have found many other options, that offer the possibility to edit picture settings, like brightness, contrast, etc. So, in your opinion, what is the best software with the best output quality and editing options? Free or not, I don't care.

You can change the HDMI output range on the AppleTV from the Settings->Audio&Video menu. If your blacks are crushed try setting the AppleTV's HDMI Output to RGB High.

I am having the same problem with a Sony KDL-42V4100, and unfortunately the HDMI output setting does not seem to work properly. RGB hi and RGB low output the exact same image. I've seen this reported in another thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10724382&#10724382), and I also confirmed this behavior on a Panasonic LCD I have as well.

HDMI settings work as expected on my Xbox 360 and PS3 connected to the same port on the KDL-42V4100 so I am certain this is a bug in the ATV 3.01 software.
