Using a TV as a monitor using a JVC DVL9700

Hi. Does anyone know how to rig up a JVC DVL9700 to a TV to use it as a monitor for FCE? I have the JVC plugged into a macbook pro using a firewire - DV lead (via an external hard drive) and the JVC into a TV via S-Video. The JVC seems to work fine with both - i.e. can capture to the mac and display on the TV. However, what it wont do is display from the mac to TV. I have set the view video to PAL and the JVC doesn't have a VCR setting - just 'play' 'auto' and 'manual record' none of which make any difference. Has anyone managed to get this to work? Any tips much appreciated.

Hi(Bonjour)!

Look in camcorder's menu to find an VIDEO OUT setting. Think about connecting audio device as S-VIDEO doesn't carry audio signal.

Can you monitor Mac on camcorder LCD? If not, see FCE user manual at page 171:

+"Troubleshooting External Video Monitoring Problems+
+If you experience problems while viewing your sequence, there are a few things you can try.+
+To quickly choose a different video interface for external monitoring,do the following:+
+-Choose View > Video Out, then choose an output option.+
+If you cannot see external video on your monitor, try the following:+
+- Choose View > Video Out > Refresh Video Devices to update the list of connected devices.+
+Note: This is especially useful if you just connected an audio or video device without quitting Final Cut Express.+
+- If you are using FireWire and DV, check the FireWire connection between your+
+computer and VTR (or other DV FireWire device) and the cables between the DV device and the external monitor.+
+- Make sure output connectors are always connected to inputs, and vice versa.+
+- If your monitor has multiple inputs, make sure the proper input is selected on the front panel of the monitor or in the monitor’s onscreen menu.+
+- If you are using a DV FireWire camcorder to convert DV to analog video, make sure the camcorder is in VCR (or VTR) mode and that it is turned on."+

Hi. Thanks for the advice but I've tried all of that. The camera does not have a video out section in the menu and it is not monitoring to the LCD. The mac can operate the transport controls when capturing so no problem with the leads. It may be that the camera is so old that it is only capable of outputting - the manual mentions that the S-video is output only. I'm starting to think that maybe the DV is too.

Hi

Can it be so that Your Camera is bought in EU.

In EU there are two kinds of Cameras. DV-in (to camera) disabled (cheap - no copy tax)
and full function DV In/Out (and taxed as VCRs)

If it has DV-in disabled then it can't be used as an analog bridge to a TV.

I use an A/D-box (Canopus ADVC-300) to do this. I find the TV very valubale to evaluate
my doings/editings.

If You have old VHS VCR tapes and plan to get them into iMovie/FCE/P then take
a look at the Canopus ADVC-300 (other brand now a days) though it has timecode correction.

This means that it can import without to much baby-sitting.

(But this is from VHS/VCR to Mac - what You need is other way around)

(Canopus ADVC-55 - Can't send out to analog - but ADVC-110 can)

Good Luck

Yours Bengt W
