Using a TV as a monitor using a JVC DVL9700

Hi. Does anyone know how to rig up a JVC DVL9700 to a TV to use it as a monitor for FCE? I have the JVC plugged into a macbook pro using a firewire - DV lead (via an external hard drive) and the JVC into a TV via S-Video. The JVC seems to work fine with both - i.e. can capture to the mac and display on the TV. However, what it wont do is display from the mac to TV. I have set the view video to PAL and the JVC doesn't have a VCR setting - just 'play' 'auto' and 'manual record' none of which make any difference. Has anyone managed to get this to work? Any tips much appreciated.
