How to extract audio from RealPlayer video files?

Hello everyone,

I have over 60 video lectures recorded in RealPlayer (.rm).
I would like to extract the audio only, from each video, move it to iTunes and into my iPod.

The lenght of each lecture varies between 10-30 minutes.

I do have Audio Hijack Pro which would basically allow me to record the sound from the video and then transferr it to the iTunes but this would require that I play each video individually, record it and so on. I simply do not have the time to do that.

I also have QuickTime Pro 7 on the Mac (and QT 6.5 on the PC) which has the option to export the audio part of a movie as aiff. This solution would be the best, however I cannot open the realplayer (.rm) files with it.

Do you know of any other method or application (preferable free) capable to accomplish that? It does not have to be Mac only as I also have a PC with XP Pro.

Thank you,
D.M.

Ok,

Evrika!

It is called "Total Video Converter". It does cost $45, is for windows only but it has a 15 days trial and it seems to be very useful as it can convert different video types into others as well as extract audio from different video formats, which is what I need.

It can also convert video to iPodvideo format and it looks very nice on my computer but do not know if it plays on an iPod video since my ipod is 3gen.

If somebody has use for this info, here is the url:

PS. If somebody does have a solution for Mac, please let me know.

Templeton Peck,

Thank you, but as I mentioned already, I do have Audio Hijack Pro.

I also mentioned that I do not want to record the streaming audio (that is, the audio coming from the videos in real time, in this case) but want to "extract" it from the video. That allows for a much faster process because I do not have to wait for the whole video to play.

All I could come up with, was to recode the RealMedia video to another format (for instance QT movie or MPEG4) and then use QT Pro to extract the audio. I accomplished that already using software for windows.

For the Mac, I only found "Podner" which in my case is not usefull since it requires Tiger while I am on Panther.

Any other suggestions and ideas are welcomed.

Thank you Braby,

I downloaded the app. However, QT Pro7 (which I have) can convert the same file formats. Converting .avi into MPEG 4 though, seems to render slightly better looking files than QT Pro7, at least on my computer and for my eyes.

Anyhow, it cannot open RealPlayer media, which I would need it to do and neither WindowsMedia files, although I installed the trial version of Flip4Mac Pro.

Any more suggestions?

What I need, is to be able to either "extract" audio files from RealMedia or to convert the Real video file to some other video format that QTPro can play.

Alternatively, any app. that can extract directly the audio file from the Real video and convert it to aiff, aac, mp3 or wma will do.

There are such apps in the windows environment and using the app described in the second post "Total Video Converter" (windows only) I got my problem solved.

I was just wondering if there are solutions for Mac?

Thanks,
D.M.

D.M. - I'm getting out of my depth here but....
Will any of these applications convert to a format readable by iMovie?
If so you can import as an iMovie project then extract audio, trash the video and export to QuickTime as audio only.
Once again apologies if this doesn't add up; I'm just thinking on my feet trying to find a workaround for what must be a frustrating problem for you.
I presume you've browsed through the audio section of the OSX pages?

To everyone who answered, I would like to thank you once again for your time and suggestions. I do appreciate them!

It seems that among the solutions offered, "ffmpegX" is the most potent and in theory has the capability to deal even with real media files, although I personally was not yet able to encode them. Perhaps I will look into the help files when I have more time.

For now though, I managed to extract the audio using the previously mentioned, windows only application and in that respect, the problem is solved for me, even though I could not use the Mac.

It will be interesting to follow how the suggested Mac applications will improve as time goes by and weather or not new ones surface.

Thank you,
D.M.
