the pipe sign in unix the vertical

i cannot find the 'pipe' sign.

mac g5 + mac book pro iphone 3g, Mac OS X (10.5.6), power mac und intel

On a US keyboard it's above the "\" key (which is above the RETURN key.) I don't know where it is on a German keyboard.

With German keyboard layout, try Option-7. (or Alt-7 on non-Apple keyboards.)
