What is the Highest Level of MAC OS X level for iMAC G4?

Well in general all the iMac G4s will run Tiger w/ the latest update so 10.4.11
If your machine is 1 GHz or above it will run Leopard w/ the latest update so 10.5.8.

Can I run Aperture iMAC G4?

Well the system reqs for Aperture 2 are:
" iMac with a 1.8GHz or faster"
There are rumors about it running on a iMac 1.25 Dunno.

I am told by a colleague that a G4 runs best on Tiger. I have Leopard installed on my G4 dual processor, and I find it gets slower. I'm not shure if I have to blame it on the OS or on the Apps (firefox, safari, mail etc) Can anybody tell if G4+Tiger is a BS story, or is there something to it?

Tiger is good, although i've seen 1.25GHz G4's running Leopard without much trouble.

867mhz G4 is the minimum for Leopard.

It depends on the gpu you have and its RAM. The cpu is not so much needed for Leopard as the gpu, since in leopard a lot of stuff already relies on fast gpu ...

My Dual G4 867 was a lot slower than my 1.3 GHz PowerBook 12" just because the latter had much better gpu.

Hi James and Volker,

I made a stupid mistake, I have Tiger (OS 10.5) running, and my colleague said that Leopard (OS 10.4) would make things run smoother. JUst visited the Apple store, and they mentioned that with 10.4 you can't run the latest versions of Safari or Firefox, with all the security penalties as a result.

Any thoughts on this? Or should I stay with Tiger and accept that the old G4 is running somewhat slower.

Tiger is 10.4 and Leopard is 10.5 ... can you clarify what you are running and what you want to run?

do you see a difference in speed when running 10.5 (Leopard) or do you believe a to feel a difference because of what you got told?

OK,

I am now officially an certified idiot. I have 10.5.8 running, and was told that 10.4 makes a G4 run smoother. I did notice that, however I blamed it on firefox, safari and mail. Also I noticed that pages and word take quite some time to start up.

My apologies for all the confusion. But before I consider reinstalling 10.4, I thought I'd pop the question on this forum.

Do you think it will make a difference, and what are your thoughts on security risks if it is true that with 10.4 you can't run the latest versions of Safari and Firefox?

I would stay with 10.5 if the difference in speed is not a killer for you. Safer, and less apps with compatibility problems.

also: Never change a running system.

Don't worry about the certified idiot, I am one myself as well often enough 😉
