Last year an ipod touch 8GB was given to me and I am just now updating everything. When I plug my ipod into my computer and open itunes, it prompts me to download and install 3.1.3 upgrade. So I hit "download and install" and right after it gets done downloading (takes 7 min), an error message pops up and says "network connection timed out"- could not install the upgrade, try again later. I have paid the 5 bucks for the upgrade and tried it about 10 times now with the same results everytime.

I have tried turning off my router and restarting that and also reset my network connections on the actual ipod itself with re-typing in my network name and password for the wifi. My wireless connection is strong and never goes out on me, as well as my ipod always recognizes it and connects automatically so I'm not sure why I keep getting this error message!

HELP!!! thx

Toshiba, Windows Vista

Your iPod needs to phone home during the update process. The reason you are getting a network time out is that iTunes is trying to contact Apple and your firewall is blocking the attempt. Make sure your firewall is off (or allows access to the ports needed) when you run the update.

Oh ok thanks for the help. This is going to sound dumb, but I am not that savvy when it comes to computers. How do i make it so that my firewall is off??

Ok I figured out how to turn off my firewall settings. Except I tried to run the upgrade with the firewall completely off and it still didn't work Any other ideas as to what's going on?

I have exactly the same problem - could there be a problem with the update program itself?

    This is very annoying...

I hope someone from Apple will respond to this issue.

With firmware upgrades and Windows machines, I normally advise that you turn off your anti-virus and your firewall while you download and install the update. Do that, plug your iPod in and then click the Check for updates box and start the process again - from the beginning.

I ran into the issue this week. said yes to upgrade, ipod was backed up, and then upgrade died. ipod touch itself indicated it was no longer aware. power down did not help, itunes could not restore to previous. Looking on apple site, I was getting a code 14 error. solution was to update itunes to 9.03, restart system and then retry the download. it worked after that, and the backup did restore all my info including kindle books etc.

Same problem with my 2G iTouch trying to upgrade to 3.1.3. "there was a problem D/L the software...the network timed out...make sure blah blah blah.." I have reset, restored, turned off firewall virus protection, removed all applications and files, itunes 9 yes, bought upgrade 9/13/09. What is the problem? Help please!?

I have the same problem. I really don't know what to do! It would cost the same about to repair it as to buy it!
