Opening Windowx XP Backup Files

Probably not. Do you have any idea what was used to create the original backup on XP.

You will need to use software that can open BackUp Exec style files as I believe BackUp Exec furnished the technology that the built-in NT Backup utility uses.

The best way to do this is with Windows and either the native Windows backup utility or a compatible version of BackUp Exec.

Kind of a pain but if you restore the files to a volume that can be mounted on the Mac you can suck off the data without too much problem.
