iPhone 3GS OS 3.1.3 Battery percentage fail?

Hi there!
I recently updated my iPhone 3GS from OS 3.1.2 to 3.1.3.
I've experienced some bugs with this update. I will try to explain everything sience my other phones camera can't capture good pictures to show the problem.
Here we go:
First I power up my iPhone. Then when it starts up the battery percentage shows me that the battery has 67 percent left. Now comes the bug. After some seconds the battery percentage meter CHANGES to 78 percent. This has never happend before I updated. I am very happy with my iPhone 3GS and I feel pretty disapointed with this update.
I find this highly unacceptable sience it has basicly ruined the user experience because I can no longer tell how much power my battery has left in percent.
I hope that Apple or someone reading this topic can help me with this problem.
Also if i restore my iPhone 3GS, will it delete all my apps and saved data from the apps like high scores from the game "Doodle Jump"?

Recalibrate the battery gauge by running the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charge until full (preferably 4 hours).

I'm so glad you know it is a FACT. Most of the rest of the 60 million of us who are happy with 3.1.3 might disagree, but that doesn't matter because you know it is a FACT. Never mind that some people had a problem with 3.1.2, and I had the same problem with 3.0 (which I fixed). Now that you know it is a FACT what are you going to do about it?

The suggestion to turn off email was a diagnostic tool, not a way of life. Which was pretty clear in the message, but I guess you didn't see it that way.

Like most of you, I went through **** with the then new 3.1.3 upgrade. I tried restoring but really, to no avail. And I can confirm that the Push notifications in exchange was the main cause.

My phone was constantly hot (and I mean hot! was so not looking forward to the blinking screen and smoke coming out of the iphone myth) and battery life was in a pity state (100 - 0% in a few hours).

Deleting the exchange helped but then again, I am a graduate student and the only way assignments are communicated down is via the (exchange) email. Tried every single method found from page 1 to 20 in this thread but yet, none was a solution.

Restoring helped but to the original settings (ala brand new phone). I ran a kind of backtesting on it first installing normal email servers and ran the phone for 24 hrs. Then with exchange on for 24 hours. Then installed all the applications I had bought and again left it for 24 hrs. And finally full blasted all the push notifications. The mean battery % was about 7% or so for all four days. Normal activities like calling and messaging was conducted. Even ran a few apps or two for a while. All communication services were toggled on (3G, Wifi, Locations etc) while the test was conducted.

My conclusion, the only sure method of a solution is to restore to factory default. And add in your emails and software. Oh, push for exchange was not turned on. Think the scripts in the iphone loops the checking of new mails and sync but kinda have no stop for it. Thus, my idea was to stop the loop from starting in the first place.

Email are set at an hour fetch for all except exchange which is on manual. MobileMe calendar and contacts on push.

This is my 7th day after the test and I kind of get on average 14 hrs of usage and standby. I do a lot of surfing and I have a stock monitor running most of the time.

I sincerely hope that the method mentioned above would be of help to someone else. Tedious, but hey it works!

There is a problem with Exchange push that can usually be easily solved. The problem is that broken connections do not close; they remain and continue using power. The following steps will allow you to use Push with Exchange without depleting the battery:

1. Go into Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendar and tap the Exchange email account.

2. Turn off the account (Turn off the ACCOUNT, do not turn off PUSH)

3. Reboot the phone (Hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears).

4. Go back into settings and turn the account back on.

You will immediately see an improvement in battery life. It will remain acceptable until the problem recurs (broken connections). When you notice a significant decrease in battery life repeat the steps above, which only take a minute or two.

I too am having an issue with battery life after the update to 3.1.3. I have an iPhone 3GS. My phone was shutting off when battery life reached 20% but today it was really frustrating when it hit 30% and shut down. The worse part is that you have to have it plugged in and charging for a few minutes before it comes back on....and when it does the battery flashes from about 3% to 20% or 30%!!!
What is Apple doing about this?? When is the next update coming out?? I don't see why we would have to do a restore to our phones when the issue is with the new firmware....apple should fix this ASAP! I love my iPhone and will continue to love it once this problem is fixed.

All I can suggest is patience... That is what worked for me. I tried everything in this thread 3 times and nothing worked. Finally, I deleted my MobileMe and that worked for a while. I had to have my MobileMe (Syncing, FMiP, etc).

What was the final solution for me was Yahoo! After I deleted my Yahoo mail account, everything has been great. I can go a day and half without charging and I am a heavy data user. Push, 3G, WiFi, Location services, etc are all on. I can still access my Yahoo account through the web interface so it is not a big deal...

I did swap out my phone at the Genius bar as well, and had the same problems. My wife has never updated from 3.1.2 and not had the problems I have (she still has her Yahoo account active in mail). My thinking is that there is a bug in 3.1.3; however, it doesn't effect everyone (I don't have a clue why)

iPhone OS4 is coming, so I'm assuming that will fix the problems with 3.1.3.

All,

I had reduced my drain by a significant amount by following steps in my replies above. However, I just couldn't get it close to my wife's iPhone 3G battery usage or what I recall my battery behavior to be before I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.2. So, I made my 3rd trip to the Genius Bar...

I saw a guy who said that Apple Engineers just released new Firmware specifically for Battery Drain issues about 2 weeks ago. Mine was one of the first phones he tried it on. Well, let me tell you, this Firmware Update worked like a charm. I left my phone on overnight with location services on and e-mail on Push (or Fetch every 30 minutes for non-push accounts).

Well, I checked it out this morning it showed 7 minutes of Usage and 9 hours and 47 minutes of Standby and 96% battery remaining!! Now THAT is how it's supposed to work! In the past, leaving the phone sleeping would have resulted in hours of usage and a battery in the 50 - 60% range by morning. Also, the back of phone is no longer warm to the touch all of the time (even while sleeping).

Right now I'm at 1 hr 2 min of Usage, 21 hrs 11 min of Standby and 82% battery drain. That's after nearly 24 hours! Before the firmware update, my phone would have been shut down with a completely drained battery by now.

All of you with battery drain problems, quit pulling your hair out and get down to the genius bar. Request, nay, DEMAND the firmware upgrade for the battery drain problem. You won't be sorry.

So is that it? We have at least 2 3Gs in our office that are having serious battery life problems... have read thru the thread here, and it stops with the genius bar firmware update. I was there last nite, and all they said was 'well, blue tooth uses a lot, and 2 email accts is a lot", etc. No mention of a new hardware upgrade, but noticed this thread stopped after he mentioned it. What's up? Thank.s

@cscud

In addition to the firmware update, there was essentially a "restore as new user performed" and then I added back my e-mail accounts. So, Mr. Finch is correct. He has added a lot of very good info to this thread. Over time, my battery life is still not on-par with my wife's old 3G (and she now has a 4 with very similar, read: "stellar", battery performance). I still don't understand why hers is so good compared to mine. She can go 2 to 3 days without charging and she is a heavy e-mail user.

However, with all of the troubleshooting I've done to date, at least I can make it through a work day now. I think the 3GS model simply made trade-offs when it came to processor speed and battery life.
