Why won't my copied DVD play on my home DVD player?

I'll try and be as concise as possible, but I want you to know that I've tried a few things and asked a bunch of people and still no definitive solution.
I copied an uncopywritten DVD on my iMac G5 using disc utility and the method described in an Apple article. I used a nextech 8x 4.6GB DVD-R. It plays fine on the DVD player in my computer, but not on my JVC
HR-XVC2OU(R) home DVD player, which does play the original DVD. I took the copy DVD to a store, and it played on a Pioneer DVD player. I made a copy on a Maxell DVD-R, but had the same result. The most reliable sounding information I got seems to be from the JVC people who said it's a format problem and that the recorder has to have ISO9660. The recorder in my computer seems to be Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-K04F. Apple Cares says they have no information about the format of this unit. So I'm kind of stuck. I've seen references to Toast on this discussion board (that means you, Joe), but I'm leery of opening another software Pandora's box. I'm not computer technically experienced and often as not I end up with software that doesn't do what I want it to for whatever reason. Probably my own ineptitude or inexperience. If there's not an easy solution, I'll settle for a definitive one. If you've reached this point, thank you. I'm at the end of my rope.

Thanks for responding, but I still have a problem. I meant to say that the original DVD-Rs (actually two different ones from different sources) play fine on the JVC unit. It's only the DVD-Rs copies (from two different DVD-Rs using two different brand of DVD-Rs) that I copied on my computer using Disk Utility that do not play on the JVC (they play fine on the computer). And I spoke to JVC helpline people who all said the unit should play DVD-Rs. Also, since posting this originally, I found out from Apple Chat that the correct recording format, ISO 9660, has been used. I have not taken the time yet to call JVC yet again to ask them what their latest idea is (what you're told seems to depend on the person you speak to) so I'm at even more of a loss to find a definite solution. Please help!

Thank you for responding. I'm a bit technically ignorant, but let me point out a couple of things and maybe you can tell me whether it's relevant. The copied DVD-R plays fine on another stand alone DVD player I tried in a store. So there is some sort of compatibilty problem with the JVC unit I think. But the Apple Chat folks said the disk utility would reproduce the DVD in the same format it was originally which, according to the JVC people, is compatible with their unit. So I'm still stumped, unless I'm misunderstanding something. If I am, or my pursuit is pointless, let me know.

I'm just gonna give up, unless there's someone out there who can help me. I've been bouncing back and forth between Apple Cares and JVC. The last thing a JVC person told me was that there was "no guarantee" that a copied DVD-R would play on their unit, even if duplicated by one of their own units. Doesn't give one much confidence.
