Chinese iPhone 3GS

Your government did not permit it. I'm sure that if you bring this to their attention, they'll be more than happy to make any changes in the laws that you require.

I'm not aware of any official iphone with that model number. Settings>General>About>Model...on your phone, what does it say?

Real iPhone or not, all official iPhones sold in China have no WiFi due to legal requirements.

In the beginning that was true, but not anymore. The Chinese government rescinded the wifi ban, but too late for the initial batch of iphones. Wifi is now permitted on iphones sold in China.

I don't believe this is yet the case for the iPhone 3G/3GS models. This Apple kb support article updated 2/2/10 indicates that WiFI is not included in Chinese iPhones:

As I said, this initial batch was built when the Chinese government had it’s WiFi ban in force and since this was recently lifted, they're not gonna throw all the phones already built out, but once sold the new batch will have wifi, as the ban is no longer in effect.

From what understand, WiFi won't be implemented in the current generation of iPhones sold in China. The Chinese WiFi standard includes WAPI security and requires different hardware.
