Disabling 2G/EDGE data on iPhone

I need to disable 2G/EDGE data access temporarily to avoid excessive charges. With most networks, this can be achieved by entering an invalid APN. But my cellular network provider is ignoring the iPhone cellular data settings and connecting me anyway. The APN Changer at www.unlockit.co.nz does not help.

Is there another technique I can use to disable 2G/EDGE data access?

The only way would be to put the phone in airplane mode, but this would also mean the phone part won't work either. You can turn wifi back on in airplane mode, but to do what I think you want & still use the phone, no.
