Enable Disk Use - What Means?

What is meant by "Enable Disk Use" on my iPod/iTunes, and when should this be enabled and not enabled (by checking the box or not checking the box)?

I have not found "Help" to be very helpful with this question.

Thank you.

*Do I understand that I would only want to check "Enable Disk Use" if my iPod is set to Manual Management.....*

You wouldn't need to check it, it changing the iPod to manual would check it automatically by default. (Except in the case of the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the "enable disk use" option)

*...... or if I am using the iPod to transfer non-music files from one computer to another?*

Correct (or you could be using the iPod as an external drive to temporarily store a file for one reason or another)

*Would I need "Enable Disk Use” checked for any music backup, copy and paste to another drive, synchronization, or any other regular iPod use?*

You wouldn't need it enabled for any regular syncing. It wouldn't make sense to use the IPod as a backup (your computer or another drive should be a back up to what's on the iPod not the other way around). I'm not sure what you would be copying and pasting from an iPod other than files you had stored while using the iPod as an external drive.

There's issue or problem I know of in having the iPod enabled for disk use but if you are not going to use it as an external drive there's not much point. Also as I said, if it's set to manual management it will be enabled by default so in that case you won't have a choice.

Enabling an iPod for disk use allows you to use it like a regular external drive and use any spare space on it to store or transport files from one computer to another. Disk use is also enabled by default when you iPod is set to manual management.

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod with disk use enabled is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

Do I understand that I would only want to check "Enable Disk Use" if my iPod is set to Manual Management or if I am using the iPod to transfer non-music files from one computer to another? In addition, that I do not need this checked if I am only using it for the normal iPod functions of music, podcasts, photographs, etc.?

Would I need "Enable Disk Use” checked for any music backup, copy and paste to another drive, synchronization, or any other regular iPod use?

Thank you for the tip on “Safely Disconnect IPod.” I practice this.

🙂 Hello again. Apart from having to explicitly eject the iPod from iTunes prior to every disconnection, I'm not aware of an issue, Yank7.

I've had an original-version Classic in "enable Disk use" for the better part of two years now. (It's useful for me for reference during troubleshoots to be able to see what's on the Classic via "My Computer".)

Zevoneer, thank you for all your efforts answering this question for me. I understand it much better.

What I get out of all of this, is that I do not need "enable disk use" checked as I am not using my iPod to store other files which are not related to iTunes, and that I can leave it checked without any negative consequence as long as I use the correct procedures to disengage my iPod from my computer. It should be checked, and will be checked automatically, if I am using "manual" instead of "automatic synch" when my iPod is connected and I am transferring my music, podcasts, and photographs.

Thank you again for your help!

🙂 I don't remember everyone, although I'm a bit surprised too by how well I do remember people here. In face-to-face contexts, I'm actually pretty poor at remembering names.

Besides, we both learnt how to get someone's default browser dialog box back in that thread over at Safari for Windows. It was a pretty memorable occasion. So when I came over here, I think I thought "wasn't that the nice gentleman from the 'default browser' thread over at "Safari for Windows?" (Apologies if I'm getting the gender wrong with that ...)
